Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson lands iconic Shakespeare roles but with a twist

Derry Girls fans are set to see Saoirse-Monica Jackson as they’ve never seen her before.

The 27-year-old actress, who plays Erin Quinn in the Channel 4 sitcom, is performing Shakespeare… in the dark!

A new web series curated in partnership with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and Sexton Whiskey sees the actress take on four of Shakespeare’s most iconic works.

Created to celebrate the return of live theatre, Shakespeare in the Dark sees Saoirse deliver an unexpected twist on The Bard, far removed from her familiar comedic persona.

She’ll perform multiple roles simultaneously, including Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and not one, but all three witches in Macbeth – each injected with her individual brand of wit and humour.

The Irish beauty shot to fame in the first two seasons of Derry Girls, but the filming of a third series has been delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was recently revealed that the actress has landed a role in upcoming DC film The Flash, alongside Ben Affleck and Ron Livingstone.

Hailing from Northern Ireland, the spiritual home of The Sexton, Saoirse worked closely with experts at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to bring The Bard’s works to life.

Dr. Anjna Chouhan at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said: “Shakespeare is widely recognised as the world’s greatest playwright, so how better to demonstrate the power of performance than by getting up-close-and-personal with his wonderful plays?

“With his work still as relevant today as it was 400 years ago, this reimagining of some of his most iconic plays is sure to ignite the inner thespian in all of us.”
