Adele has broken her silence over the backlash she received from her controversial Notting Hill Carnival photo, saying “I didn’t read the f*****g room.”
The Hello singer caused a stir when she posted a picture to Instagram with her in Bantu knots and wearing a Jamaican flag bikini.
The star had been on holiday in the Caribbean last summer when the snap was taken.
The photo, which she shared to mark what would have been the Notting Hill Carnival weekend in London, received a furious backlash from critics who accused the mum of cultural appropriation.
But the singer has responded to the incident in a new interview with British Vogue.
“I could see comments being like, ‘The nerve to not take it down,’ which I totally get,” she said.
“But if I take it down, it’s me acting like it never happened. And it did. I totally get why people felt like it was appropriating.”
She explained she wanted to wear the outfit as she felt Jamaican culture was “entwined” with that part of London, so she should “dress to celebrate the Jamaican culture”.
“I didn’t read the f***ing room,” she said, before apparently joking that she received something in the way of karma for her error.
“I was wearing a hairstyle that is actually to protect Afro hair. Ruined mine, obviously.”
The star also opened up about her new and upcoming album as well as her break up with her ex-husband Simon Konecki.
The singer unveiled her impressive 100-pound weight loss in a series of stunning photos for the interview.
She opened up about her body transformation, admitting she became addicted to working out.
She said, in the British and US Vogue interview: “It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone. I got quite addicted to it. I work out two or three times a day.”
Her incredible hourglass figure was squeezed into a plunging gown, and in another photo she wore a tight-fitted corset dress, being synched at the waist.
