BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker admits he feels 'inadequate' after huge Strictly blunder

BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker has opened up about the error he made in his dance routine on Strictly Come Dancing last weekend – admitting he feels ‘inadequate’.

Dan was criticised by the Strictly judges on Saturday, with Anton Du Beke confessing he was “mortified” for the star, as Craig Revel Horwood sniped: “You really need to work on your arms, they’re not working as they should.”

The Sheffield-based morning presenter had messed up a few of the steps in his Prince Charming inspired routine, which saw him receive a rather low score – but thankfully remain in the competition as Judi Love and Katie McGlynn headed for the dance off.

Katie was eventually eliminated from the competition, one week after EastEnders star Nina Wadia.

On Tuesday’s instalment of BBC Breakfast, Dan was sitting with co-host Sally Nugent and sports journalist Katherine Downes, discussing the cricket news.

Irish player Amy Hunter became the youngest player to hit an international century on her 16th birthday.

“She’s 16, she’s amazing!” Sally said of the cricket star.

But as the presenters discussed her victory, Dan couldn’t help but say: “I feel thoroughly inadequate – again.”

Dan had previously admitted he was “gutted” by his Strictly mistake – and it became clear he was referencing the dancing error once more on BBC Breakfast.

Kat interjected: “Oh, come on! Dan Walker!”

As Sally chipped in: “We need to build him up, don’t make him feel inadequate! You’ve got it Dan!”

Dan quickly insisted: “I’m fine, don’t worry. I’ve got it this week, I’m in the zone.”

Thankfully, Dan’s fans were there on Saturday to rally around him on social media on Saturday night, as one tweeted: “Great dance Dan! Keep going. Great positive attitude.”

Another fan chipped in: “What a completely lovely man @mrdanwalker is! We all makes mistakes & that’s what learning is all about”.

But despite support from the fans and ‘head judge’ Shirley Ballas, Anton’s critique of Dan must have been crushing.

He explained: “Oh, I wanted to say, ‘arise Sir Daniel’, but you went wrong and I can’t tell you who’s more disappointed, me or you quite frankly because you were dancing it quite elegantly.

“You’ve got a wonderful posture and your arms are improving… but you went wrong.”

A despondent Dan replied at the time: “If it makes you feel any better, I’m gutted as well.”

He revealed he felt like he had let his professional dance partner Nadiya Bychkova down “a little bit”, but added: “The whole point of this programme is that people who can’t dance are learning to dance and part of the process of learning to dance is making mistakes.”

Movie Week proved difficult for some, but viewers were reduced to tears by certain routines – including Rose Ayling-Ellis’ Titanic themed foxtrot with Giovanni Pernice.

John Whaite’s Pirates of the Caribbean dance with Johannes Radebe also stole the show, while Rhys Stephenson’s hip-hop style Spiderman bop also proved a hit with the judges.

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
