Phil Butler dead: Comedian and magician dies suddenly aged 51

Phil Butler has died at the age of 51, his management has confirmed.

The comedian and magician’s management confirmed the news in a statement on social media.

Chris Davis Management said: “It is with huge sadness we have to announce the passing of our friend and client Phil Butler.

“Our thoughts are with his friends and family. The world is a poorer place without him.”

Phil’s cause of death has not yet been shared.

The star had a long and varied career on the comedy circuit, and was the first comedian to perform for troops on the front line in Afghanistan.

He received the Operational Service Medal for his time out there.

As well as performing his own skits, Phil was a popular lead in pantomime during his career, and entertained on cruise ships.

Phil had been scheduled to star in Nottingham’s Theatre Royal production of panto Robin Hood in December.

And in 2018 he worked with Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood in Woking’s New Victoria Theatre’s production of Cinderella.

He also wrote for other performers, including British comedian Paul Zerdin who won America’s Got Talent in 2015.

Tributes began pouring in for Phil from fans and colleagues who shared their thoughts and well wishes.

Benidorm star Asa Eliott wrote: “Utterly devastated at the news Phil Butler has passed away. One of the funniest people I’ve ever had the privilege of calling my friend.”

Britain’s Got Talent finalist and impressionist Danny Posthill said: “So shocked and saddened at the death of Phil Butler. A great comedian who was such a laugh to be around. Sleep well my friend.”

Fellow comedian Paul Kerensa said: “I can’t believe that the wonderful Phil Butler is no longer with us. Always fizzing with energy and joy and comedy, comedy, comedy. We saw him in panto – my kids howled with laughter. At every stand-up gig, he stole the show. Way too young, one of the best. Thanks for the laughs, Phil.”

And actress Suzanne David shared an image of them together in panto, writing: “Such incredibly shocking and devastating news. It was such a pleasure working with Phil in panto; he was the perfect Buttons and made me laugh every day. I think of you every time I eat some Maltesers Phil.”
