Former EastEnders star and Just Good Friends legend Paul Nicholas surprised fans as he appeared on ITV’s This Morning as a rapper.
Paul, 76, who is known to fans for playing Kathy Beale’s third husband Gavin Sullivan in the soap shocked fans with his new look and career change.
Appearing on Tuesday’s programme with a white goatee beard, the actor who is also a musical theatre and pop star, told presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary that he wanted to do something different in his profession.
Giving fans further insight into his new found hip-hop talent, a clip was also played of Paul rapping about tea and why he loves it so much.
Dressed in a suit while wearing a flat cap, the father-of-six said: “I was going to be a rapper like Jay Z. Notorious has always been my cup of tea.”
Talking to the presenters about his new musical direction, Paul explained: “I decided I needed a change of direction. Actually, I’ve got a CD coming out.
“One is a pop CD one is a theatre CD and one is a romantic CD. So rather than come out with an old song I thought I’d look for something new to do.”
He added: “A friend of mine wrote this song. I thought it was quite funny.
“It gave me the chance to dress up as a Peaky Blinder because the costumes are very nice and had great fun doing it. It’s more current than some of my songs.”
The star also admitted that he enjoys the contemporary sounds of rap music and said: “It’s more current and I enjoy it.”
But although Paul seemed to express his joy about his rapping talent, viewers at home were distracted by his unrecognisable look.
Taking to Twitter, one viewer tweeted: “Paul looks so different compared to when he was in EastEnders.”
Another shocked fan exclaimed: “Blimey I didn’t recognise Paul Nicholas!!”
“Paul Nicholas looks well different,” a third surprised viewer wrote.
As well as his role on the famous Albert Square, Paul was one of the TV heartthrobs of the Eighties who dazzled audiences playing Vince in Just Good Friends.
He also had a prosperous pop career which kicked off in 1976. Paul had three Top 20 hits with Reggae Like It Used To Be, Dancing with the Captain, and Grandma’s Party.
