Kate Garraway's heartbreaking confession as she admits she's scared to cry about Derek

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has admitted that she still hasn’t “really cried” over husband Derek Draper, following his year long battle with Covid-19 in hospital.

Derek, 54, was hospitalised with Covid-19 in 2020 and has since been battling the aftermath of the illness at home, requiring 24 hour care from nurses.

Kate, 54, said to Stella Magazine that she is not ready to see a therapist for fear of “opening the floodgates”, saying “I mean I still haven’t really cried.

“So I don’t feel in the right place to see a therapist yet.”

The mum of two also praised her children for their bravery, saying “Darcey and Billy have been so amazing.

“They’re both processing it all in different ways and they do talk about it with friends.”

During the interview, Kate also said how having Derek at home has helped her and their children feel closer to him again, after they could not see him in hospital for long periods of time due to restrictions.

She said that there are also “the little things” she misses about Derek, such as the way he could not do anything before he had a bath and singing very loudly in the mornings.

Kate also revealed that she would “give everything [she] owns” to hear him being loud and opinionated again.

Derek’s health battle was discussed in the award-winning documentary Finding Derek.

Kate won a National Television Award for the documentary, saying at the awards ceremony, “Thank you so much for voting, I wonder if the reason why you did is because our story is your story. I think we’ve all been touched by the pandemic, whether it’s livelihood or mental health.

“I just want to say to all the Darcey’s and Billy’s and Derek’s and Derek’s families, whatever you’re going through, you’re not forgotten. We want the joy back, we want it to be over but the fight goes on.”

Derek was first hospitalised with Covid in March 2020 and was placed into a medically induced coma to help aid his recovery.

He was allowed to return home earlier this year, but Kate previously revealed that he still “sleeps 20 hours a day”.

GMB airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
