Brandon Lee's family responds to tragic death on Alec Baldwin's film set

The family of the late actor Brandon Lee, who also died while filming a movie, has spoken out after the tragic accident on the set of Alec Baldwin’s new film Rust.

In the early hours of Friday morning, the 63-year-old accidentally handled a prop gun that misfired and tragically killed award-winning cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, who has since been discharged from hospital.

Brandon, who was the son of the late martial artist Bruce Lee, was killed while he filmed on the set of The Crow in 1993 after his fellow actor fired a gun that he believed to be loaded with blank bullets.

The star shot from a distance of 15 to 20 feet and hit the 28-year-old square in the abdomen, after which he was rushed to New Hanover Regional Medical Centre where he later died of his injuries.

It was later discovered that the gun used on set was loaded improperly as the tip of the dummy cartridge was lodged in the chamber and fired at the actor along with the blank.

Following the tragic news of the mum-of-one’s death, the family of the late Hollywood star have shared their condolences to the family online.

Brandon’s sister Shannon Lee, who maintains her late brother’s Twitter account in his honour, tweeted: “Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on Rust.

“No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period.”

Since then, the actor’s name has been trending on the social media platform as people remember the late actor’s fatal scene who passed away of similar circumstances almost 30 years ago.

One user penned: “One of the first stories I ever covered as a journalist was the accidental death of Brandon Lee. It left me with a lifelong dread of guns on set. This is horrific.”

Another added: “Reminder that the actor who portrayed Funboy in The Crow, and who accidentally killed Brandon Lee, was so shaken he left acting for a year after the film.”

A third said: “Hollywood learned nothing from Brandon Lee’s accidental death.”

Another agreed: “Hollywood didn’t learn after the Brandon Lee accident. Truly tragic. My heart goes out to Halyna’s family.”

Elsewhere, another asked: “How did this happen? After Brandon Lee’s accidental death, I thought there were safeguards put in place to prevent something like this from happening?”
