Alec Baldwin, 63, reportedly had no idea the prop gun he accidentally shot two people with on the set of his new film Rust was filled with live rounds instead of blanks.
Authorities in Santa Fe, where the Western movie is being filmed, confirmed it was the star who fired the prop in question.
They also confirmed the actor had hit the director and cinematographer after doing so.
The incident has killed Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, and left Director Joel Souza, 48, with serious injuries.
Hutchins was airlifted from the film’s set at the Bonanza Creek Ranch after the stunt firearm hit her in the stomach.
She was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she later tragically died.
Souza was also hit by the prop gun, the Santa Fe County sheriff has verified, and is currently being looked after in intensive care.
The accident at the set, which is often used to shoot movies, remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper wrote that Mr Baldwin had been spotted weeping outside the local sheriff’s building.
Speaking to Deadline, a representative for Rust said: “There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.
“Two crew members have been taken to the hospital and are receiving care. Production has been halted for the time being.”
After Santa Fe authorities confirmed Halyna’s death, John Lindley and Rebecca Rhine of the Cinematographers Guild, released a statement.
It read: “We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called Rust in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set.
“The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event,” added the guild executives.
“This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”
