Jamie Lynn Spears says parents pushed her to abort baby as it would 'kill career'

Britney Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn Spears has claimed that her parents tried to make her abort her pregnancy when she was 16.

The 30-year-old is now mother to 13-year-old Maddie, who she had as a teenager, as well as three-year-old Ivey, who she shares with husband Jamie Watson.

In her new book – Things I Should Have Said – the American actress documents what happened after she told her parents and her management team about her pregnancy back in 2007.

Jamie Lynn Spears says she “went through hell” when she was pregnant at 16, and that her parents and team were all pushing her towards adoption, abortion and trying to hide her from the public eye.

In a later snippet, as reported by TMZ, she writes that some of the people that were closest to her at the time “came to my room trying to convince me that having a baby at this point in my life was a terrible idea”.

She said they told her: “It will kill your career. You are just too young. You don’t know what you’re doing. There are pills you can take. We can help you take care of this problem, I know a doctor.”

Spears said that she was not allowed to communicate with anyone, not even her own sister Britney, and that her phone was taken from her to avoid all contact with anyone that wasn’t considered her “immediate circle”.

She also said that “everyone around me just wanted to make this ‘issue’ disappear” and that terminating the pregnancy would be the right thing to do.

Neither of Jamie Lynn’s parents were said to be happy about the pregnancy, with the star writing that she got into a fight with her father Jamie after he tried to push for the adoption route.

Her mother was also reluctant with the idea, taking Jamie Lynn to a cabin in Connecticut to hide whilst OK! Magazine broke her pregnancy story.

Jamie Lynn wrote: “Momma wore her disappointment like her favourite jacket.”

Having to hide her struggle from older sister Britney upset Jamie Lynn and she spoke about being unable to turn to her in such a trying situation: “I needed her more than ever and she wasn’t able to help me in my most vulnerable time… to this day, the hurt of not being able to tell my sister myself still lingers.”

Jamie Lynn came under fire for announcing the release of her book during the height of Britney’s conservatorship fight.

Britney Spears was under the conservatorship of her father Jamie Spears for 13 years and ended in September this year, during which he had control over many major aspects of the singer’s life including her finances and healthcare.

Recently Jamie Lynn attempted to donate some of the proceeds of her memoir to a mental health non profit but was refused as it would be seen as the organisation being complicit in her sister Britney’s conservatorship.
