Kate Garraway has opened up about her new position as the host of Life Stories after Piers Morgan announced he would be stepping down after 12 years on the show.
The former Good Morning Britain host announced he was stepping down from the series on Thursday night after he presented 100 shows with various celebrities over the years, and introduced his former colleague Kate into the role.
He shared the surprising news with his 8million followers on Twitter where he explained how he would be leaving the show halfway through the series to pursue a role on his new global daily show.
Former ITV star Piers, 56, welcomed his successor and announced that his final episode of the show would be an in-depth interview with Kate herself, which is set to air later this month.
He wrote: “I’m quitting Life Stories after 12 years and 100 shows. My final one will be with my fabulous friend @kategarraway and she will then present the remaining 3 planned shows of the next series as I leave ITV to host my new global daily show. It’s been a blast!”
After the news hit the headlines, Kate opened up about the transition over to the show after Loose Women presenter Ranvir Singh congratulated her on her new position.
She opened with: “Kate I was so thrilled, as is everybody in the building, to hear that you’re taking over from Piers on Life Stories. Congratulations.”
To which Kate gratefully said: “Thank you very much indeed. I’ve got to go through the gamut of being interviewed by him on Life Stories first before he goes off to pastures new and then I will do.”
Surprised by the answer, Ranvir joked: “Was that the condition? That you’ve got to do it?”
“Actually, it was like, ‘Don’t escape my clutches first’,” Kate clarified. “But no it will be lovely and I’ve got a big list of people I want to talk to.
“Who would you think I should [interview] … I think Tom Jones. Wouldn’t Tom Jones be great? Because he’s never done it.”
In utter agreement, Ranvir added: “Completely. I can’t believe he’s never done it – what a life he’s had.
“Now you know that show, when you film it, can go on for, like, three hours. It’s like three hours of filming, so prepare yourself, it’s like being in a therapy chair, isn’t it?”
“Are you suggesting I can’t talk for hours? Because I think you know differently,” she joked.
Ranvir added: “You know, I’m not suggesting that. Well, listen, we’re really thrilled for you Kate, we really are.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
