Strictly Come Dancing’s Adam Peaty was “so in character” when he ‘almost kissed’ Katya Jones on last week’s show.
The 26-year-old Olympian came under fire last weekend for seemingly almost locking lips with his professional dance partner Katya.
During the pair’s Argentine Tango, the temperature was soaring as they amped up the heat with their passionate dance before fans thought they ‘almost kissed’.
The ‘almost kiss’ made waves on social media, with Adam’s girlfriend even reacting on her TikTok page.
Adam and his dance partner Katya appeared on Strictly: It Takes Two with host Rylan Clark, when Adam explained that he was “in character” at the time.
The pair spoke about the importance of “emotion” in their dancing.
Adam said: “It was the feel, the character. I got so into the character and it was amazing. I really really felt at home there.”
Katya then chimed in: “The thing is, we kept getting different comments from the judges that we were working on technique but they were saying you’re just not connecting to the music and to the emotion.
“So we started completely differently, every move, what does it mean? You’re grabbing my hand – what’s the emotion attached to that and I think we definitely improved on that.”
Last week after the explosive dance and ‘near kiss’, Adam’s 23-year-old girlfriend Eiri posted a reaction video on social media.
Her video on social media platform TikTok was captioned “watching your boyfriend almost kiss another woman live on TV” as Eiri could be seen pretending to cry in the dramatic skit.
The sound paired with the video was a crying noise, which intensified just as she threw her head back in grief and then wrote: “Finding out 10million people also watched it live.”
Adam soon took to Twitter to thank fans for supporting him, while issuing a warning to any ‘gossipers’.
He said: “My favourite dance so far. Thank you to everyone who has sent supporting messages! I loved it.
“To everyone who wants to see what they want, your comments have real life consequences. I will not be overcome or lowered by your gossip. Protect your energy.”
In an interview on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show this week, Adam and Katya spoke out about their dance again.
The pair urged listeners that their dance routine was just “acting”.
Speaking to Zoe, Adam said: “It’s being believable, isn’t it?
“You don’t want to do a dance like that and not do it justice because you haven’t switched on right at the end.
“So it’s being believable, and that’s what I think some people get carried away with.
“But, hey ho, that’s life, isn’t it?”
