Inside Dick and Dom's lives – DJs, famous wives and toilet backlash

Richard McCourt and Dominic Wood became some of the most famous children’s television presenters of their time on BBC’s Dick & Dom In Da Bungalow.

They were the must-see act on Saturday mornings for kids and adults alike tuning in to giggle along while watching the dynamic duo shout “bogies” loudly in public spaces.

Fans would tune in religiously to watch their antics unfold each week, in games such as Pumpy Rumpy, Musical Splatues and Make Dick Sick or Make Dom Vom.

The pair – who are now 44 and 43 – are about to be back on screens causing carnage on new Channel 4 show Celebrity Ghost Trip.

But what have they been up to since their kids’ TV fame?

Early career

Dick & Dom In Da Bungalow was like no other entertainment show before and quite frankly, in this day and age it would be a hard job for any broadcaster to get away with some of the antics that previously went down.

Although the programme was certainly divisive, that didn’t stop millions from tuning in each week – with some iconic games quickly becoming a viral sensation.

At the peak of their career, Dick and Dom previously explained in an interview with Vice in 2019 that their lives had been very “rock-and-roll”.

While the famous double-act would party hard with crew they’d met on the show, they would always be raring to go when the taxi rocked up outside to pick them up each morning.

At the time, they were in their twenties with a “don’t care attitude”.

Dick said: “We had a don’t care attitude. Our lifestyle was a bit rock-and-roll at the time: we partied hard and worked hard, young and having fun.”

Dom added: “All our mates worked on the show, we were mates together. You couldn’t wait to get to the studio – it was so exciting when the cab pulled up at 5AM.”

Lavatorial backlash

In 2005, the tag-team came up against Government ministers who slammed their toilet humour.

A case was presented to the then Conservative culture secretary, Tessa Jowell, to consider if the BBC programme was deemed suitable for public service.

MP Peter Luff asked the culture secretary to consider if certain elements of the show actually made for appropriate viewing.

He said in his questioning statement: “You can join me in playing How Low Can You Bungalow?, a test to see your response to grossly embarrassing personal situations, largely of a lavatorial nature; Pants Dancers in the Hall of Fame, photos of children with underwear on their heads; Make Dick Sick, a game which I think speaks for itself; and finally Bunged Up, in which you play a character in a sewerage system avoiding turtle poos coming from various lavatories.

“Is that really the stuff of public service broadcasting?” the MP asked.

In spite of the turbulent and potentially damaging feedback, the BBC decided to standby their decision that the programme did meet standards of “decency” and “taste”.

However the following year, the programme was taken off-air.

Life away from the cameras

Both Dick and Dom are married to famous wives

In spite of living in the fast lane for many years, the two good friends actually have quite normal and down to earth lives.

Dom tied the knot with allSTARS* singer Sandi Lee Hughes in 2005 and the married couple have two children together.

Richard is engaged to Katrina Bryan – an actress and CBeebies presenter – with the pair enjoying a vibrant lifestyle together on outings with friends and sporting events.

The Scottish Taggart star and the children’s entertainer welcomed their first child together this year.

Messages of “congratulations” flooded in as Dick took to Instagram to share the happy news, writing: “S*** got real.”

What are they doing now?

After the bungalow curtains had been drawn closed both Dick and Dom admitted some of their career opportunities had been derailed.

They did however go on to host the hit quiz game Are You Smarter Than A 10 Year Old in 2007 and 2008.

Other hosting opportunities included gameshow Spatalot, Dick and Dom’s Hoopla and Absolute Genius.

With TV gigs hard to come by, the twosome were hit hard during the pandemic after they’d turned to Panto and become drum and base DJs to make ends meet.

Now Dick and Dom are hoping to attract some old fans from the early noughties as they return to screens in Celebrity Ghost Trip.

Celebrity Ghost Trip starts on Sunday 24th October at 9pm on E4 an continues Monday–Thursday at 10pm.
