Daniel Craig has addressed the criticism he faced after it was announced he would be playing James Bond.
The Wirral-born actor first auditioned for the role of Ian Fleming’s James Bond jack in 2005 for the film Casino Royale that was released in November 2006.
However, the news of his casting was met with rage due to Daniel having blonde hair while his predecessors were known to be much taller with a head of dark hair.
While filming was underway internet campaigns urged Bond fans to boycott the film while Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton voiced their support for Daniel.
Despite the backlash, Daniel, 53, has revealed that he has absolutely no regrets when it comes to playing the famous MI6 agent that propelled him to international stardom.
Speaking on SiriusXM, he said: “I’m glad I did it. It was painful to do but I kind of read everything and just thought, ‘well, there’s not much I could do about that’.”
The Knives Out actor initially found his newfound fame hard, admitting: “The whole concept of fame, and you know, being public and having a public persona and all of these things were just so alien to me, I didn’t understand it.
“I suppose I acted because I wanted to be famous but I acted because I loved acting.”
Daniel went on to admit that while he loves a shaken not stirred Martini, he avoids straight nightclubs and prefers gay clubs for their “chilled” atmosphere.
He explained: “One of the reasons [is] because I don’t get into fights in gay bars that often because the aggressive d**k swinging in hetero bars, I just got very sick of [it].”
Discussing his earlier years on the Wirral peninsular, Daniel added: “As a kid, because it was like, I don’t want to end up in a punch up, and I did, that would happen quite a lot.”
Speaking on his experience in gay bars, he said: “Everybody was chill, everybody. You didn’t really have to sort of state your sexuality. It was okay. And it was a very safe place to be.”
