Holly Willoughby fights back tears over tragic MDMA death on This Morning

This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby got emotional on Tuesday’s show after talking to Kerry Roberts, the mother of 15-year-old Leah Heyes, who died of an MDMA overdose in 2019.

Ms Roberts was joined by the mother of Connor Kirkwood, who supplied Leah with the drugs that killed her. The pair have formed an unlikely friendship, bonding over the grief of their children.

Holly welcomed the two before addressing the difficulty of their situation. She said: “Thank you so much for being here, I know it’s difficult but there is a lesson in here somewhere.”

She added: “I’m so sorry for your loss, 15 is just too young by far.”

Holly, mother to Harry, 12, Belle, 10 and Chester, 7, was visibly emotional talking to the mother about the loss of her teenage daughter.

After asking what Leah was like as a person, Holly stammered on her words and held her hand up to her chest before apologising for her reaction on camera.

Both Holly and Phil looked distressed as the mother recounted the events of the evening to help raise awareness of the dangers of MDMA.

Ms Roberts and Ms Kirkwood, the mother of Connor who was jailed for 21 months for supplying drugs to Leah, bonded over their mutual desire to spread awareness of their struggle.

The mothers spoke about organisations such as ‘NO MDMA’ which help to teach parents and teachers about the dangers of the drug and how to educate their children.

The two mothers also spoke about the importance of young people knowing what to do if they’re in an emergency, drug-related situation.

Ms Roberts recalled: “There were lots of friends around in the park.” She added that if they knew what they were doing, the situation might have ended differently.

Although Ms Kirkwood has had a difficult journey in the past few years, she has bonded with Ms Roberts and is helping her son get back on his feet.

Feeling sympathy for both mothers, Holly said: “This is still incredibly raw for you, I don’t think you ever get over a loss like that.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and on the ITVHub.
