Coronation Street's Johnny Briggs 'haunting' the set to 'carry on soap romance'

It’s believed that the ghost of Coronation Street legend Johnny Briggs is haunting the soap.

The actor, who died in February, played businessman Mike Baldwin for 30 years.

Sources think his spirit is still around after reports of spooky goings-on at the Rovers Return and the set of Underworld, Mike’s knicker factory.

An ITV insider said: “A few things have happened, such as things being moved, namely the prop bottles of scotch.

“That was Mike’s favourite drink on the show, he was always propping up the bar with one.”

They added: “Some of the crew said they’ve smelled whiffs of cigar smoke.

“Obviously no one can smoke on set and that was Mike’s thing.

“Lights have also dimmed when the cast have been rehearsing and reading lines on the Underworld set.”

Some crew believe Johnny is back to carry on his TV romance with Anne Kirkbride, who died in 2015.

Cobbles icons Beverley Callard and Bill Roache previously said they believe the spirit of Anne, who played Deirdre Barlow, is still around.

Mike and Deirdre’s affair and his feud with Bill’s character Ken, who was wed to Deirdre, was one of the biggest in Corrie’s history.

A source said: “Deirdre chose Ken in the end but perhaps Johnny thinks they have unfinished business.”

It is not the first time the show has been hit by hauntings, in 2018 a BBC Two crew pulled out of filming on the set after hearing it was haunted.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Johnny had left his daughter out of his £550,000, leaving her “stunned and heartbroken”.

Following his death, it had been reported that the dad of six left his UK and US assets including his house in Florida to five of his six children.

The Sun reported that the established actor deliberately left out his eldest daughter after he disowned her in 1980 after their relationship broke down.

Speaking to the publication, she said: “He told me in 2018 that he wanted to give me some money but said, ‘If you put it up your nose or in your arm, how can I live with myself?

“But when I’m dead it won’t matter.’

“That’s when I last saw him, but we spoke on the phone regularly.”

She blamed family disputes for being snubbed in the will.
