Good Morning Britain viewers were left fighting back their fury on Friday, as they accused one climate related segment of sending the entirely wrong message.
Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard were presenting in the studio when a Bahamas-based segment was playing behind them, which showed a turtle swimming through the ocean with a GoPro strapped to its shell.
The segment was discussing the effects of climate change on the natural environment, with US correspondent Noel Phillips travelling out to the Bahamas in order to film the clip.
Noel explained: “With a camera attached to its shell, this is the view of a turtle deep below the seabed.
“Sea turtles have survived for over 400million years, but climate change is now posing a threat to their future.”
In the studio, Ben joked that the turtle had been “mounted” by the GoPro.
Ben said: “Now, you can see the beautiful water behind Mr Turtle, who has clearly been mounted by a GoPro in some way. I’m sure it’s been very humanely done!”
Kate couldn’t hold back her giggles as she replied: “Either that or that cameraman is very light that’s riding on his back!”
Ben then introduced the segment properly, explaining: “The Bahamas is on the front line of the climate crisis. where oceans and the animals that call it home are being badly impacted.”
But fans at home were left infuriated by the lighthearted banter in the studio, as one complained: “Not sure strapping a camera on the back of a turtle is very ethical and sends out the wrong message TBH!”
Someone else agreed: “#GMB banging on about coral reefs and climate change, strapping a camera onto a turtle a really big help for animal welfare!”
Others had an issue with GMB’s reporter presumably flying out to film the segment, as one fumed: “Lovely report – climate change is important. Yet we fly in a TV crew to say we need to save the environment. Isn’t this a bit hypocritical?”
“So why did GMB fly him out there then… hypocritical, don’t you think?” someone else agreed.
However, someone else quickly explained: “He travelled there so UK public can see what’s happening abroad!”
The furore comes just a day after viewers of the brand-new John Lewis Christmas advert were left up in arms about the “damaging” climate message contained within, as a young alien crashes to Earth.
In response to the ad, one furious viewer posted: “One penned: “That spaceship didn’t look climate friendly and it destroyed a few trees #JohnLewis.”
Someone else wondered: “Oooh, does it mean we don’t need to worry about #COP26 or climate and biodiversity breakdown due to runaway consumerism because we’re going to be wiped out by a meteorite? Or aliens? Is it aliens??”
Good Morning Britain airs from 6am weekdays on ITV.
