Strictly fans accuse judge Shirley Ballas of being 'overly critical' of Tilly Ramsay

Strictly fans were left upset when they thought Shirley Ballas was being “too critical” of Tilly Ramsay’s tango routine.

Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Tilly danced the tango to Ava Max’s Kings & Queens on Saturday night’s live show (November 6) – alongside her dance partner, Nikita Kuzmin.

It came after she admitted she was “struggling” with the dance routine during rehearsals.

However, when it came to the judges’ comments, Shirley had quite a lot of negative feedback for Tilly, despite saying she had improved.

Host Tess Daly asked her: “Shirley, you’ve scored Tilly a nine for the past three weeks. What did you think tonight of the tango?”

Shirley started off by talking about the design of the set, saying: “Well I loved the setting, and I loved the ambience, and we’ve come to be able to rely on the performing side of things.

“So you’ve got that in the bag. You can tick all those things off.”

She went on to explain that Tilly was lacking in flow during the dance, and her footwork needed improving.

Shirley told Tilly: “I still would like to see more flow when you’re in frame. And had a little bit of a look at the feet just to see how they’re going.

“Some things have improved, but it definitely needs more ankle articulation, and you definitely need to be just a little bit further over to his right side.

She added that there were some “frame issues”, but she said that overall Tilly was on a “good improvement”.

Anton Du Beke said that Tilly’s position “wasn’t quite right” due to her head positioning, but that it was a “good performance”.

Craig Revel-Horwood added that it “stopped and started too much”, and that the footwork wasn’t up to scratch, but that it was “sharp and staccato” – even that he loved the dramatic nature of the routine.

Some BBC viewers thought Shirley and her fellow judges were too critical on Tilly’s dance.

One fan on Twitter wrote: “oh no Shirley praising the production design before anything Tilly did 🙁 #scd #strictly”

A second wrote: “Why are they being extra critical on Tilly let others are getting left off with mistakes?”

A third wrote: “Shirley telling Tilly what she needs to improve like… #strictly #scd” as they attached a clip of a comically long scroll, hinting that she had too many negative points for Tilly.

A fourth commented: “Wondering how Shirley gave Dan a 8 and Tilly a 7…….”

For her tango, Tilly scored a total of 31 points out of 40, with all judges awarding them an 8 apart from Shirley, who gave her a 7.
