Sally Nugent giggles as she makes BBC Breakfast history amid Dan Walker fishnets quip

BBC Breakfast hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay couldn’t help but collapse into giggles during Wednesday’s show, as Sally made show history with a rather cheeky fishnets quip aimed at her usual co-star Dan Walker.

It came amid a slew of serious news, with new Covid-19 variants arising in the UK and the government introducing measures to attempt to tackle them – including the reintroduction of masks in shops and on public transport.

But Sally clearly wanted to lighten the mood, as she told Jon: “Do you know what, we’re just going to take a little moment now to really move away from the quite serious news that we’re talking about today.

“I’m going to say something I’ve never said before on BBC Breakfast. Are you ready?” she asked her temporary co-presenter.

Preparing to make show history, Sally explained: “Fishnet stockings, fabulous frocks, and incredible dance numbers.”

Jon couldn’t help but chime in with: “Dan?!”

Giggling beside him, Sally forged ahead: “Strictly? No! It’s not Strictly. We’re talking about the world’s most famous cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge.”

Gathering himself, a chuckling Jon attempted: “20 years ago it was, that it inspired that iconic film with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. And now there’s a stage version of it, on stage, opening in the West End! Our music correspondent, Mark Savage, has had a quick preview.”

Thankfully, the show then cut to a pre-recorded segment about the new show while the presenters both gathered themselves together.

It comes as Dan was missing from Wednesday’s programme, which he usually presents alongside Sally.

According to his social media, he’s back in rehearsals with his Strictly Come Dancing professional partner Nadiya Bychkova, and preparing for Saturday night’s quarter-finals.

Dan has worn some wacky outfits on Strictly so far – would fishnets be out of the question?

They’re preparing to dance a Tango for their next routine – but whether or not Dan will be donning fishnet stockings for the occasion remains to be seen.

Fan responses to the news item were, however, mixed, with some fuming that the segment appeared to give away the ending: “Wow @BBCBreakfast just killed Moulin Rouge West End production ending! For a generation who have never seen the movie…”

Another moaned: “Love Moulin Rouge so much but is it news…”

Although someone else chipped in: “Just made me want to book to see it!”

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
