Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas has admitted that she only had a boob job because she wanted to keep her ex happy.
The former professional dancer made the confession in a new interview with Prima magazine, revealing that she has struggled with low self-esteem for her whole life.
Shirley, 61, confessed that she underwent the cosmetic procedure on her breasts because she thought it would make her “husband at the time like [her] more”.
Shirley said: “I have struggled with my self-esteem all my life. I’ve done all sorts to try to make myself feel more confident: I had my teeth straightened and fat drained out of my arms and legs.
“I thought doing my boobs would make my husband at the time like me more, but I was doing it for the wrong reasons.”
The popular Strictly panel member then reminded other women that only when they love themselves will they find happiness.
She continued: “You have to love yourself first. That’s my message to every woman.”
Shirley also opened up about how she is trying to be more personable in her Strictly appearances by letting her personality shine through.
She said: “I’m learning to be myself more on the show. That’s something my son Mark said to me: I need to drop the walls because people can spot it when you’re being guarded. They see right through it, so I might as well be the real me.”
Shirley also admitted her relationship with actor Daniel Taylor, 46, has changed her life after her two marriages failed.
She explained: “My relationship with Danny has changed my life. He’s very different to anyone I’ve been with before. First of all, he’s 6ft 1in, he’s the tallest man I’ve ever dated, and I love his jet black hair.
“He’s also very kind and very caring – he’s always there for me. I hope he’ll propose one day, but he’s never married and I think he’s a bit nervous about it, so we’ll see. Come on, Danny!”
It’s not just Danny who keeps Shirley on her toes, she says she has a strict fitness regime to ensure she stays healthy into her senior years.
She said: “Health is my priority at 61. I keep fit and try to eat well. I work out on my Peloton bike and do yoga. I also try to drink two litres of water a day. My downfall is my sweet tooth!”
While she finds herself in a happier place now, Shirley once struggled with her mental health and feelings of loneliness, partly due to her career goals.
She described the difficulties admitting it damaged her relationships in the past: “I felt very alone in the past. When I had a career goal, I would build a wall around me as a coping mechanism and as a way of drowning out negative voices.
“I don’t think that’s a very healthy thing to do – it definitely had an effect on both my marriage and my friendships.”
While the current season of Strictly is already drawing to a close, Shirley already has something else in the pipeline she’s excited for in the run-up to Christmas.
She said: “I’m in panto again this year. I’m playing the Wicked Queen in Snow White at the Assembly Hall, Tunbridge Wells. I’ll have to sing and dance and, even though I’m in my 60s, the dancing part is still what I enjoy the most!”
The January issue of Prima is on sale from December 2.
