BBC Breakfast plunged into chaos as 'power cut' turns out lights during interview

BBC Breakfast host Jon Kay didn’t know quite what to do with himself during Thursday’s episode, as a suspected ‘power cut’ turned out the lights mid-interview.

Jon, seated alongside Naga Munchetty on the red sofa, was busy interviewing Jim Cardwell, Head of Policy Development at Northern Powergrid, about the recent power cuts in the north due to Storm Arwen.

The storm has battered the country so much that ITV even had to pull the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! contestants from Wales’ Gwrych Castle, with production equipment ending up damaged in the chaos that followed.

And in a chaotically ironic moment, the lights were soon out – leaving Jon worried that they’d lose connection.

Beginning the interview, Jon said: “Thanks for joining us, I know you guys are flat out. I guess the key thing people need to know is – when are they going to get reconnected, how is it looking?”

Jim began to explained: “Storm Arwen has done massive damage. It took out around 240,000 people, and as a region we’re probably one of the worst affected by all this.”

But the feed soon stuttered to a halt, and Jim was plunged into darkness as the lights at his office went out in one sudden hit.

He said nervously: “Oh, excuse me a minute. Hang on a minute.”

Jon couldn’t help but repeat: “I don’t believe it!”, with Naga laughing uproariously in the background at the hilarious situation.

When the lights eventually came back on, Jon begged: “Okay, we have power reconnected. Please tell me that wasn’t a power cut!”

Jim explained: “The irony, Jon, is that’s the energy efficient lighting turning off! So badly timed – I apologise for that!”

But Jon was the first to admit that he found humour in the situation, as he suggested people without power want to take revenge on Northern Powergrid.

Having interviewed Andy, one of the men affected, previously, he offered: “Do you know what I think – it was people like Andy, who are so frustrated they were going to your connection out the back and trying to get their revenge!”

He added: “Thank you for reconnecting. You’re obviously very energy efficient. You were saying that they will get reconnected soon – just like you!”

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
