Inside Sandra Bullock's life – plane crash, home invasion and stalker hell

Sandra Bullock plays a convicted murderer in her new Netflix film The Unforgivable, out now, and it turns out her real life is almost as dramatic.

In the new movie, the 57-year-old plays Ruth Slater, a woman trying to rebuild her life after serving time in prison for committing a violent crime.

It is actually based on a British miniseries, Unforgiven, released in 2009, which starred Suranne Jones as the same character.

The Hollywood actress is known for taking on big roles, such as in Bird Box and the more light-hearted Miss Congeniality – but she’s had plenty going on behind-the-scenes too.

Here, Daily Star takes a look at the dramatic life of one of Hollywood’s finest.

Stalker hell

Sandra’s obsessed stalker, 42-year-old Joshua Corbett, was convicted in 2017 after he broke into her Hollywood home back in 2014.

During the trial the court heard the 911 call that Sandra made when she realised there was an intruder after she thought she heard “wind blowing”.

She could be heard saying: “I’m in my closet. I have a safe door. I’m locked in the closet right now.”

When the police arrived, Joshua was still in the house and police arrested the intruder, who was clutching a notepad with a handwritten letter and photographs of Sandra.

He pleaded not guilty to breaking into her property and stalking the actress.

In May 2018, police attempted to carry out an arrest warrant at Corbett’s home.

The stalker barricaded himself inside his house, leaving authorities no choice but to attempt to gain entry with a SWAT team and thus commenced a five-hour negotiation to try and convince Corbett to hand himself in.

Corbett was armed and made threats to kill anyone that attempted to enter the building but authorities gained entry, only to find Corbett dead from a gunshot wound.

The Oscar award winning actress recently opened up to Willow Smith, Jada Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris on Red Table Talk about the incident: “It was the one night that our nanny goes, ‘Let me just take him to my apartment, which is up the street, because you’re gonna be out late.’

“Had he been home, I would’ve run to the closet, which is now my official closet, but it was his bedroom and it would have changed our destiny forever.”

Bullock called the invasion a “violation” which changed her life: “I wasn’t the same after that. I was unraveling. I haven’t been alone since the day it happened.”

Luckily her son was not in the house at the time of the incident.

Horror plane crash

Sandra was involved in a plane crash on board a chartered business jet in 2000.

The plane attempted to land at night during reduced visibility conditions on December 20 and Sandra, another passenger and two crew members miraculously got away unscathed.

The aircraft was severely damaged – the nose cone was completely separated from the plane, the right wing was partially torn off and the left wing was bent.

It is believed that the pilot’s view of the runway was so impaired that they mistook some ground lights for lights that indicate the middle of the runway.

Adoption

Sandra has raised her adopted children Louis since 2010 and Laila since 2015, and has admitted to having frank and honest conversations with him about race from an early age.

She said on Red Table Talk: “To say that I wished our skins matched… sometimes I do because then it would be easier on how people approached us. I have the same feelings as a woman with brown skin and it being her babies, or a white woman with white babies.

“Maybe one day we will be able to see with different eyes.”

Custody battle

Sandra and her now ex-husband Jesse James fought for custody over his daughter Sunny after her mother was deemed unfit after multiple drug binges.

Janine Lindemulder is an actress turned adult movie producer who was released from prison in July 2009 after serving time due to a $200,000 tax evasion charge.

In her application for the child’s custody, Sandra wrote: “While in Janine’s care, sometimes Sunny is left alone during the day while her mother is asleep from drug use.”

Lindemulder, who has appeared in adult films herself, appeared on the cover of Blink 182’s 1999 album Enema Of State and gave birth to her first child with James in 2004.
