Strictly John Whaite's lavish London apartment – huge kitchen and grisly military past

Part of the 2021 celebrity cohort of Strictly Come Dancing, John Whaite rose to fame when he won The Great British Bake Off in 2012 – aged just 23 – but is now taking the world of dancing by storm.

The Lancashire-born baker is partnered with Johannes Radebe for the popular BBC One dancing competition, which comes to an end next weekend.

Away from Strictly, John is loved-up with his fiancé Paul Atkins. The pair have been together for more than 12 years, and after selling their London pad, they moved to Leeds – where they both now reside together.

Open about his lavish London apartment, John has often invited the camera into his home to give his fans a glimpse inside.

To celebrate John’s dancing prowess in the competition so far, we take a look around his swish home.

Converted hospital apartment

John Whaite and boyfriend Paul Atkins have been together for 12 years

In 2013, John and his partner Paul moved into a stunning converted military hospital apartment in South East London.

The one bed flat was spacious, sleek and full of dreamy accents and interiors. With 12-foot high ceilings and sash windows, his flat was sumptuous and chic.

John spoke to Right Move in 2016, where he said: “I fell in love with the apartment as soon as we saw it.”

In 2016, John and his fiancé decided to put their home up for sale so that they could move to Leeds, where John’s business is based. In his chat with Right Move, John said: “I’m sad to be selling the apartment, but business for me is now up in Lancashire.”

The apartment had many impressive features, one being that it’s a Grade II listed development.

Other features include a swimming pool, gymnasium and tennis court within the complex, as well as a coveted private parking space.

Huge kitchen for baking

John is a baker and won the Great British Bake Off when he was just 23

Wherever John will live, there’s bound to be a huge kitchen kitted out with everything he needs to bake up a storm.

The baker-turned-dancer’s London flat had a lavish cooking space, complete with top of the range items. And it was even the place that he wrote his second and third books.

Speaking to Right Move while the flat was on the market, he said: “The size of the kitchen is what sold it to me, as well as the beautiful grounds.

“I spent three very happy years here – my second and third books were written from the kitchen. And my third book was photographed there (the shelves on the front cover are in the lounge).”

Prime leafy location

His London pad was in a prime location

Set in the London borough of Greenwich, John and Paul’s city home was surrounded by leafy green space – perfect for nature lovers.

And being just 1.1 miles from Eltham Station, 1.3 from Kidbrooke Station, and 1.4 from Woolwich Dockyard Station – they were brilliantly situated.

The apartment complex was a converted hilarity hospital, and part of the historic Royal Herbert Pavilions development.

Built in 1865 the Royal Herbert Pavilions is a converted Grade II listed military hospital by Oxleas Woods.

Sleek decor

Wherever John will live, his kitchen will have to be huge and stocked with the best appliances

Practical yet chic, the decor that John and his fiancé opted for in their one bed apartment was full of chic touches.

The living room had a grey and neutral colour scheme, and boasted of having gigantic book shelves – perfect for storing an array of John’s favourite cookery and baking books.

A large wooden table sat in the living room, with a clear vase sitting in the centre that displayed three stems of dried hydrangeas.

Clearly into a few subtle bright colourful touches, the living room also featured a chunky studded armchair.

Lovers of the colour cream, within the apartment there was a cream three-seater sofa and a cream double bed with a studded headboard.

Grey accents spilled from room to room – grey walls, grey bed sheets, and grey throws.

Little is known about his current abode, but we bet it’s full of lavish details, just like his old flat!
