Fans of the feel-good Christmas movie The Holiday have shared a chilling take on the romantic comedy claiming that main characters Iris and Amanda – played by Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet – are both actually dead.
The 15-year-old flick has been subject to a series of dark fan-theories that claim there are much darker motives to the story’s plotline.
Winslet and Diaz star in the rom-com classic as Iris and Amanda, two women from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean who have unfortunate love lives.
To avoid heartbreak during the most wonderful time of the year, they decide to switch houses.
Diaz’s character Amanda leaves her Los Angeles home to spend Christmas in a quiet Surrey cottage and temporarily escape her romantic troubles back in the States.
Meanwhile, Winslet’s character Iris is similarly plagued by a man in Surrey, so she does a house swap with Amanda and ends up in sunny Los Angeles.
To most of us, this seemed like a typical Hollywood plot, but some fans had a very different reading.
Reddit user tectonic_fever posted their chilling theory on the Fan Theories forum on the site to put forward the idea the film is actually a murder plot.
The fan claims Iris and her widower brother, Graham, played by Jude Law, hatched a plan to use the home exchange website to murder Amanda and steal her money.
“This idea makes the mediocre Christmas movie so much more entertaining,” they wrote.
“Kate Winslet and Jude Law are laying a trap where he will seduce Cameron Diaz, marry her, kill her, and inherit her fortune.
“Jude Law already murdered his first wife so he could inherit her house.”
They continued: “Kate is so overjoyed to see how grand and luxurious Cameron’s house is because she knows she and Jude have hit the jackpot.
“Meanwhile, Jude carefully sets up an ‘accidental’ meeting and manipulates Cameron to develop a relationship and get his claws into her.
The Holiday fan uses the scene when Iris arrives at Amanda’s house and is ‘overjoyed’ to see how luxurious it is because she knows she has ‘hit the jackpot’.
“Kate Winslet was maybe also planning to seduce and marry the old screenwriter and wait for him to die and leave his house/fortune until Jack Black interfered.”
Another theorist claims Iris and Amanda are actually ghosts.
“What if these two women, thousands of miles and several time zones away, shuffled off their mortal coils at the same time,” the user wrote.
“Winslet’s suicide attempt was in the evening, Diaz’s terrible breakup ostensibly in the morning: considering one is in London and one is in California, these could be simultaneous and their souls became entangled.”
