Coldplay's Chris Martin says being in a “s**t choir” set him on the road to stardom

The 44-year-old singer and Coldplay’s lead vocalist, Chris Martin, revealed that being a part of a ‘s**t choir* during his teenage years helped him on his journey to stardom.

The pop-star whose chart-topping songs include the likes of ‘Fix You’ and ‘Paradise’ has a music career dating back to the late 90 – Chris is a talented vocalist, rhythm guitarist and pianist.

Speaking about his success in music, Chris pinpointed that it was being apart of a “s**t” young person choir that had revealed his musical talent and helped him on his journey into stardom.

The Fix You singer, said: “I was at a religious choir school, and I wasn’t in the main choir – I was in the s**t choir.”

The chart-topping star nostalgically added: “But then we had this amazing teacher, whose job was to do music with the not-so-good choristers,” which had included the Hymn For The Weekend singer.

Chris continued: “That guy called Steven said, ‘There are a bunch of cheap keyboards in this room. Everybody go and write a piece of music.’ And at the end of that class he said that what I wrote was pretty cool.”

Reflecting on his anecdotal story, Chris relayed how that single moment changed his life and gave him the confidence and drive to pursue a career in music.

Chris added: “He encouraged me and helped me. When the first song arrived, I was 12.”

Devon-born Chris, who attended the Exeter Cathedral School, reminisced about the experience and finished by adding: “So much about the world is whether you have the people to find your thing and the opportunity to do it. I was very blessed that I was in a place where I was encouraged and discovered.”

Chris head’s up the British rock band Coldplay formed in London in 1996.

The band consists of Chris Martin, lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer Will Champion and creative director Phil Harvey.

The renowned band are achieved worldwide fame with the release of the song “Yellow” in 2000, followed in the same year by their debut album Parachutes, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

The band have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, making them the most successful bands of the 21st century.
