Harry Potter fans are eagerly awaiting the 20th anniversary reunion programme Return to Hogwarts on New Years Day, which will reunite cast members including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
Daniel Radcliffe rose to fame at the age of 11 alongside his Harry Potter co-stars as the famous character, working with some of the world’s greatest actors including Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter and Robbie Coltrane.
Since making the films, the actor has amassed a huge net worth and has also spoken openly about his battle with alcohol addiction, his close co-star bonds and his relationship with another famous star.
Huge net worth
It is no surprise that Daniel Radcliffe, like his fellow Harry Potter co-stars, earned a huge fortune from the film series.
Daniel’s estimated net worth is now £89.2 million, following his appearance in the Harry Potter series, as well as films including The Woman in Black, Horns and Victor Frankenstein.
He also recently told Forbes Magazine that from a young age he had financial advisers to support him, saying: “I was obviously very fortunate financially from very, very early on.
“When you’re young you’re obviously not going to be handling it then, it would be something that would just overwhelm.”
It is also reported that Daniel is a keen collector of first edition books and artwork, with the actor investing his money into art, rare books, stock and properties, which has increased his investment portfolio by £10million in just one year.
Alcohol battle
Daniel has spoken openly in the past about his alcohol addiction, saying he drunk to cope with the fame of playing Harry Potter.
Speaking to Off Camera, he said that he felt like he was being ‘watched’, adding “In my case, the quickest way to forget about the fact that you’re being watched is to get very drunk.”
“And then as you get very drunk, you become aware that ‘Oh, people are watching more now because now I’m getting very drunk, so I should probably drink more to ignore that more.”
He also added that despite drinking to cope with the fame of Harry Potter, it was a job he adored, saying “Even at the lowest point, I still loved my job so much.
“I loved going to set, and there was never a day where my own [feelings] would affect how I was on set, there was never a point where I was like, ‘Oh, I wish this hadn’t happened to me, I wish I wasn’t Harry Potter.”
The actor also explained that he drank more as the Harry Potter film series was ending, telling Radio 4 programme Desert Island Discs: “I definitely think a lot of the drinking that happened towards the end of Potter, and for a little bit after it finished, it was panic and not knowing what to do next, and not being comfortable enough in who I was to remain sober.”
However, Daniel explained that with the help of friends, he managed to deal with his alcohol addiction and has been sober since 2010.
Uncle Vernon co-star bond
Despite Harry Potter and Uncle Vernon onscreen feud, in real life, Daniel Radcliffe and Uncle Vernon actor Richard Griffiths were very close.
After the Harry Potter films, Richard starred alongside Daniel once again in the theatre production Equus, which was one of Daniel’s first major roles outside of the film series.
However on March 28 2013, Richard Griffiths died aged 65 following complications from heart surgery.
Following his death, Daniel paid tribute to his close friend and fellow actor, telling BBC news: “Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career. I was proud to know him.
“Any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence.”
Co-star crush
Not only does Daniel have close bonds with his fellow Harry Potter co-stars, but he has also admitted to having crushes on one particular actress – Helena Bonham Carter who played Bellatrix LeStrange.
In the upcoming Harry Potter 20th anniversary: Return to Hogwarts reunion programme, Helena Bonham Carter asks Daniel to read aloud a photo he signed on the day they finished filming Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows Part II in 2011.
The inscription on the back revealed that Daniel had a crush on Helena, with the message reading: “Dear HBC, it was a pleasure being your co-star and ‘coaster’ — in the sense that I always ended up holding your coffee.
“I do love you and I wish I was born 10 years earlier as I might’ve have been in with a chance. Thanks for being cool.”
Famous girlfriend
Daniel isn’t the only huge star in his relationship, as his long term girlfriend is the actress Erin Darke.
Erin is a massive star in her own right, appearing in films such as the Beach Boys biopic Love & Mercy and Still Alice, as well as TV series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Good Girls Revolt.
The couple have been dating for over nine years after meeting on the set of 2013 film Kill Your Darlings, with Daniel telling Playboy magazine that there was an instant attraction.
Talking about their onscreen chemistry, he said: “There’s no acting going on—not from my end, anyway.
“There’s a moment when she makes me laugh, and I’m laughing as me and not as my character. She was incredibly funny and smart. I knew I was in trouble.”
