Chat show legend Trisha Goddard has hit out at the “dinosaurs“ who criticise today’s “woke” society – warning them: “The meteor’s coming.”
Stars such as Piers Morgan have frequently slammed snowflakes and woke culture but Trisha, who yesterday revealed she’s engaged for the fourth time, reckons it’s “bullying.”
She says: “There was a very male way of looking at issues and a 1970s and 1980s male way.
“They’re trying to discredit the more caring by calling it ‘woke’ and ‘snowflake’.
“It’s bullying. It’s the dinosaurs’ last scream. If you can’t fight like us you’re not relevant. Keep saying that, the meteor’s coming.
“They don’t like the world of emotions and inclusivity because they don’t understand it. It’s personally threatening to them. They can’t deal with it.”
The 64-year-old announced her engagement on social media after her mystery man of four years, known as “Boo”, popped the question over New Year.
Trisha has been divorced three times and delightedly revealed to her followers this is the first time she hasn’t bought her own engagement ring.
And she tells the Daily Star how Boo, who she lives with in Connecticut, US, always stands up for her when she faces racism.
Trisha says: “If he sees any kind of racism, even if I don’t even know it, he’s on the phone, he’ll be down there.
“At one stage I had something happen in a shop. He’s a businessman, he got onto the HQ and lodged a complaint. And the person was moved from that shop.
“I’ve never had that. I’ve had partners who laughed along with the racist joke in front of my face, told me I’d get over it, ‘don’t be silly it’s in your head.’
“I now have a partner who will champion me, who will stand up to people. I’ve never had a partner who’s proud of what I do.”
But before Trisha steps down the aisle for the fourth time, she’s got the matter of a new TV show which started Wednesday.
She’s hosting Channel 5’s revamped version of You Are What You Eat – which previously had a poo-inspecting Gillian McKeith at the helm
While the earlier incarnation focused on shock tactics to scare people into changing their unhealthy lifestyles this unpicks the reasons behind people’s behaviour.
“Yes a scientist examines poo but there’s also a whole team of us working to find what drives people to eat what they eat,” says Trisha.
“What really resonated for me was looking at how people change when they change their diet – not just the weight loss, but mentally, their approach to life.
“It’s not about frightening people, because fear only lasts so long. You can scare someone all you like but the thing I think appeals to people the most is, ‘Wow this makes me feel better – my head is in a different space purely from what I’m eating.’”
She also believes Britain could help combat the obesity crisis by teaching children to cook at school.
“I think the old days of teaching kids to cook in schools should be brought back,” she says.
“If kids grew up having a basic knowledge of how to do fast, cheap, easy, home cooking it would help.”
The TV icon is best known for her long-running chat show Trisha, which attempted to resolve issues for members of the public.
And in the wake of the Jeremy Kyle scandal – which saw his programme axed following the suspected suicide of guest Steve Dymond – she believes the days of “bear-baiting” are over.
She says: “I think the old kind of bear-baiting show has moved on to people who’ve been there, done it and are still trying to work out how to wear the T-shirt. A more listening, caring, understanding approach.
“I’m not saying we got it right all the time but my shows reflect all the years I’ve been involved in mental health.
“And I would like to think that’s the future, where you get people who have actually had life experience of the subject you’re dealing with. You get a very different flavour of show.”
*You Are What You Eat aired Wednesday at 8pm on Channel 5.
