Strictly's Jamie Laing admits romantic Sophie Habboo proposal almost went very wrong

Reality star Jamie Laing has opened up about his romantic proposal to model Sophie Habboo, revealing that it almost went wrong.

The couple, who met while filming reality series Made in Chelsea, announced their engagement in an Instagram post on December 18 last year.

Jamie rose to fame when he appeared on the second series of Made in Chelsea 2011, and has since gone on to make the final of Strictly Come Dancing as well as setting up his own sweets company.

Now, catching up on their BBC podcast, ‘ 6 Degrees from Jamie and Spencer ’, the former Strictly star told his friend Spencer Matthews how his proposal to Sophie unfolded.

“Long story short, we had our first ever date, pretty much, in the Rosewood Hotel,” Jamie began.

“So I said to her that I was filming something for my business in there, so we had to go and do that, and would she meet me afterwards because they’d given us the room.

“So I went there in the middle of the day, at about 1 o’clock in the afternoon. I got balloons, I got candles, I got flowers…

“I wrote four letters in a row because I knew that I would get too emotional if I was trying to say it to her. So I write it all down in letter form, on the ground so she would come in [and see it].”

With all the preparations complete, Jamie remembered that he had called Sophie to ask what time she would be arriving, only to find out that she was stuck in traffic.

“I had lit so many candles, the room was roasting, it was so hot, oh my god,” he continued.

“So then I was like, ‘I’ve got to turn the aircon on’, and the balloons were flying everywhere because the aircon was blowing them.”

But despite the chaos of the scene, the reality star was able to collect himself just as his partner arrived at the room.

He added: “Finally, she arrives at the hotel… she knocks on the door, I run to the door, I unlock and I say, ‘read the letters!’ and run back into the room.”

Jamie’s romantic life had been under intense scrutiny when he starred on Made in Chelsea, where the love lives of posh West Londoners are put under the spotlight.

So, it was with relief that he told Spencer how happy the moment of his proposal had made him feel.

He explained: “There is nothing quite like that moment when you get down on one knee and you say those words, ‘will you marry me?’ and I said it to her, and I thought I was in a movie, I was freaking out.”
