BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty says co-star needs ‘dose of realism’ in brutal shutdown

BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty shut down Mike Bushell’s sporting optimism as he updated viewers on the latest developments in the ongoing cricket match between Australia and England.

During Saturday morning’s instalment of the popular news show, the sports correspondent joined the 46-year-old and her co-star Charlie Stayt on the sofa.

The dad-of-three explained the latest developments in the Novak Djokovic tennis scandal after his visa was cancelled for the second time ahead of the Australia Open on Monday.

And despite appearing on air with the latest sporting news this morning, the broadcaster still managed to follow the developments of the overseas cricket match.

After he updated fans on the major sports coverage of the day, he concluded the segment with disappointment as he informed viewers that the England team had “lost too many wickets” to rival their competitors.

He complained: “Over to the cricket, and England still haven’t got past 300 [points] in the series.

“I was hoping about 20 minutes ago that they were going to get there but now they’ve lost too many wickets since I’ve joined you on the sofa.”

It was at this point that things turned slightly awkward as Naga relentlessly asked him: “Why? Why were you hoping [England would do well?]”

Mike explained: “Well, because they’ve gone half an hour without hitting a wicket, am I maybe an optimist?”

To which she responded: “You are, yes, you are. But here’s a dose of realism though with what it’s like outside, a complete contrast to what it’s like in Australia.”

The broadcaster then threw it over to meteorologist Tom Ash for the latest weather updates over the weekend which looked to be another wet and windy few days across England.

It comes after the TV presenter left fans “curling their toes” during an awkward interview with Security Minister Damian Hinds.

The 52-year-old MP appeared on the programme after further allegations emerged suggesting Tory MPs had held two further parties which are claimed to have taken place on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral.

Just days before the Queen was seen sitting along as she said her final goodbye to her loving husband, Boris Johnson’s previous Director of Communications James Slack hosted a party for his friends and colleagues.

During the show, Naga read out an apology statement by the Tory MP adding that “the party on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral should not have happened.”
