Dancing on Ice's Bez escorted onto the ice by Torvill and Dean as he makes show history

Dancing On Ice burst back onto our screens on Sunday night, with fans going mad for one contestant in particular – Bez from the Happy Mondays.

The music sensation was escorted onto the ice by skating legends Torvill and Dean, but also made Dancing On Ice history by being the first celebrity to ever don a helmet on the ice.

Appearing on the live show donning a helmet in the shape and style of a huge watermelon, Bez arrived onto the ice sitting on a large pair of maracas.

It was hinted previously that Bez could be the first celebrity to ever don a helmet on the ice when the hosts and judges of the show spoke ahead of the launch.

In an interview ahead of the show host Phillip Schofield said: “I think we can honestly say that Bez this year is the first celebrity that we think is going to go out for the first time with headgear onto the ice.”

Christopher Dean added: “When we first saw Bez at the – we call it the bootcamp when everybody comes for the first day and we can talk to them about what’s going to happen, the process and their first sort of steps on the ice.

He even had to be escorted onto the ice during rehearsals

“Well, Bez’s first steps on the ice were without skates because he’d been knocked unconscious from a boxing match that he’d been doing.”

Chris continued: “He’s up for a challenge and I don’t know whether he’s bitten off more than he can chew on this one but he’s a lovely, lovely person.

Even though tonight is the first night of the series, viewers of the show are already loving Bez’s presence on the ice.

A third penned: “Bez on #DancingOnIce was the best thing I have seen this weekend. I loved it!!!”

While a fourth said: “Flicked channels to see Bez on #dancingonice and loved it, and his melon helmet. Whilst he is on, I will be watching with a big smile on my face.”

Dancing On Ice airs Sundays at 6:30pm on ITV.
