The Apprentice's Shama Amin quits show as 'painful' medical condition forces abrupt exit

The Apprentice star Shama Amin has quit the show, Daily Star can reveal.

The nursery boss was forced to pull out due to health reasons.

In this week’s episode, mum-of-five Shama reveals she is battling rheumatoid arthritis, which is a condition that causes pain and stiffness in joints.

She says: “I would just like to say something, Lord Sugar, if that’s OK. I suffer from a condition called rheumatoid arthritis.

“Because of medical reasons, due to this process being so physically demanding, despite the efforts the whole team has made to support me, I’ve had to make a difficult decision to leave the process.”

After Shama, 41, announced she was leaving, Lord Sugar told her: “Well Shama, I’m really sad to hear that. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.”

Shama’s shock exit means she misses out on the chance to compete for a £250,000 investment.

But she has insisted she had no choice but to go.

She said: “Mentally, I was strong enough to carry on. But my body wasn’t allowing me to carry on. So I had no choice but to make a difficult decision like that.”

When Shama signed up for the show, she was hoping to be a positive role model for Asian women.

She said: “Being a lady of colour, wearing a headscarf as well, and the challenges that we face on a daily basis, I just want to be a living example for the Asian women and South Asian women out there.”

Shama’s exit leaves 13 candidates to fight it out for victory on the BBC series.

In this week’s episode the teams are tasked with creating a non-alcoholic drink and then trying to convince industry experts to buy it.

But they all struggle to pull it off.

A show insider said: “One team plays it safe with flavours but struggle to replicate a key ingredient, meanwhile, a fruity late addition in the other team’s drink isn’t to everyone’s taste.

“At their events, both teams pour on the charm with their retailers, but with drinks proving somewhat hard to swallow, sales are a struggle.”

Watch it on Thursday at 9pm on BBC One
