Munich – The Edge Of War: Release date, cast and where can I watch it?

Netflix has developed an excellent reputation for its ability to make period dramas, and its latest offering, Munich – The Edge of War, promises to be no exception.

Directed by Christian Schwochow, the brand new spy thriller is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Harris, which looks at one of the key events leading up to WWII.

The film serves as a grim reminder of how easily dictators can sweep to power. It is set in Germany in 1938 and details the goings-on during the Munich Conference while Adolf Hitler prepares to invade Czechoslovakia – one of the key moments that ultimately kicked off the Second World War.

Two pals find themselves in the thick of the action as tensions reach boiling point in Europe.

For added realism, parts of the film were actually shot inside the building where the real-life conference took place.

In a tweet, Netflix said: “Autumn 1938. Europe is on the brink of war as two old friends find themselves in a web of political subterfuge.”

In an official statement about what fans can expect ahead of the release, Netflix wrote: “Europe stands on the brink of war. Adolf Hitler is preparing to invade Czechoslovakia and Neville Chamberlain’s government desperately seeks a peaceful solution.

“With the pressure building, Hugh Legat, British civil servant, and Paul von Hartmann, German diplomat, travel to Munich for the emergency Conference. As negotiations begin, the two old friends find themselves at the centre of a web of political subterfuge and very real danger. With the whole world watching, can war be averted and, if so, at what cost?”

The film will star legendary actor Jeremy Irons, known for his parts in The Lion King, Die Hard With A Vengeance, Eragon, Watchmen, Dead Ringers and many more.

He has even picked up an Academy Award for best actor for his part in Reversal Of Fortune in 1990.

He will play the role of British prime minister Neville Chamberlain.

It will also star Anjli Mohindra, who is known for her part in Vigil, the tense submarine BBC drama released in 2021. In the film she heads over to Munich as a secretary for the conference.

The film will take us back to the eve of the Second World War

Speaking about her role as Joan to Digital Spy, Anjli said: “She popped off the page as soon as I read her. Her short time on screen really packs a real punch, and even makes a reference to her ethnicity. There were lots of South-Asian civil servants working for the British government at that time.

“In fact, there were Indian people living and working in Britain from as early as the late 19th century. So to play a character that some people might perceive as colour-blind casting, but I just think is so representative of its time, is really exciting.”

The film will also feature George MacKay, known for 1917 and Peter Pan, as Hugh Legat.

Sandra Hüller will also feature as Helen Winter. She is known for Above Us Only Sky and Toni Erdmann.
