EastEnders fans thrilled as Phil remembers Peggy Mitchell days after flashback

EastEnders fans have rejoiced after Phil Mitchell and Sharon both mentioned Peggy Mitchell, played by the late and legendary Barbara Windsor, in tonight’s episode (January 27).

The pair were exchanging words over Phil’s reluctance to tell Kat (Jessie Wallace) about his probable long prison term when the namecheck happened.

A reluctant Phil (Steve McFadden) has been unwilling to tell Kat about the possible reality which could see him spend the rest of his life behind bars if the police decide to try him for various criminal activities of which he’s been accused.

At the beginning of the episode, Sharon (Letitia Dean) approached Phil and begged him to reconsider his decision to not let Kat know, which is when Peggy was mentioned.

EastEnders fans grew excited as Phil and Sharon mentioned Peggy Mitchell in Thursday’s episode

Sharon told Phil: “I’m not going to stand back and watch you go down for life. If Peggy was here…”

Interrupting his former spouse, Phil replied: “Well, Peggy ain’t here, is she?”

Sharon then demanded that Phil tell Kat that day and exited the garage.

In spite of the tense scenes, EastEnders viewers were thrilled to hear Peggy mentioned in the episode and posted to Twitter to share their delight.

One wrote excitedly: “Peggy mention.”

Sharon warned Phil that his mother wouldn’t approve of his decision regarding Kat

Another commented: “Oof Peggy mention.”

A third said: “That was such a special moment.”

Phil has been ruminating over his mother as of late, with her voice being used alongside that of his brother Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) earlier this week.

During Tuesday’s episode, Phil sat in the middle of the square and gazed up at the Queen Vic when Peggy’s voice spoke to him.

Recalling his late mother in a flashback, Phil heard Peggy say: “Phil, you gotta get out there and defend what’s yours.”

The soundbite was taken from an old episode of the BBC One soap.
