Viewers of The One Show were left touched and emotional after TV Judge Rob Rinder shared a heartfelt tribute to his family in honour of Holocaust Memorial Day.
The 43-year-old joined hosts Ronan Keating and Alex Jones on the sofa to honour the landmark day as he opened up about his own grandfather, who survived the death camps during World War II.
Clearly sparking an emotional reaction, viewers took to Twitter to praise Rinder for sharing his story and spreading awareness of such an important part of history.
One viewer said: “Rob Rinder spoke so clearly on The One Show about how a civilisation just like ours can descend into hell so fast…..I’m lighting my candle now. Thank you Mr Rinder for speaking on behalf of those who cannot.”
Another seconded his praise, commenting: “A stunning reminder from @RobbieRinder #TheOneShow this evening Holocaust day today reminds us to #standup to all forms of hate in #ourcommunities at any time #HolocaustMemorialDay.”
While a third echoed: “I lit candles to remember #HolocaustMemorialDay Brought me to tears watching your piece on #TheOneShow @RobbieRinder”
More than 6 million Jewish men, women and children were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
Speaking about his family and his connection to the Holocaust Rinder said “I had the gift of the presence of a Holocaust survivor – my grandfather.
“When somebody’s been through that much trauma the story never unfolds in one narrative. It exists in quiet whispers around them or perhaps in the presence of a scar or perhaps in the way they behave and that was true of my grandfather.”
Speaking about what he learned about his family on Who Do You Think You Are, he added: “To learn the names of his four sisters, his parents and his brother who were murdered in Treblinkablinca death camp – when you hear these stories you have a vested responsibility. you become a witness.
“My story, my family’s story is a story of humanity in each and every one of us.”
Judge Rinder also sat down with Holocaust survivor Lilly Ebert, whose family was murdered in the Holocaust
Lilly, one of the last remaining survivors of Auschwitz, recalls being separated into right and left queues on her arrival at the camp before learning her mother, younger sister and brother who were sent to the left, were sent to gas chambers
“When the chimney fire came out we asked people what sort of factory is here. someone said this is not a factory they will burn your parents, your children. You parents are burning. I saw it with my own eyes. I still cannot understand how that is possible, but it is true.”
In a bit to spread awareness, Lilly has taken to TikTok with the help of her grandson Dov and has become an unlikely star gaining more than 1 million followers.
“We must never forget,” she added.
