Only Fools and Horses star Patrick Murray has expressed his fears thats the word “plonker” could be removed from scripts of the legendary show – if it were to make a comeback.
The 65-year-old believes that the word might not be so popular with today’s viewers and worried it could be cancelled due to “wokery”.
Now, the actor who is best known for playing the role of Trilby-lover Mickey Pearce, feels some of the sitcoms most famous catchphrases could be axed by the BBC.
Predicting what could be yet to come, he explained in an Interview with The Sun that “plonker” could find itself on the chopping block as he believes fans could find that work “offensive”.
He told the publication: “The woke thing has got a bit ridiculous.
“People with nothing better to do will write in saying they’ve been insulted.”
in the same discussion, Patrick went on to reveal that he’d decided not to tell his late co-star John Challis about his cancer diagnosis.
Earlier this week, the TV star opened up that doctors had discovered a tumour on his liver, and it had been touch and go whether he would live to see Christmas.
Knowing that his friend John – who played car dealer Terrence Boyce, who was otherwise known as Boycie on the sitcom – had his own “serious problems” with the disease, he decided to keep his struggles to himself.
Doctor’s had informed Patrick about his own cancer struggles in August last year and he admitted to speaking with John after he was made aware.
Just a month later, John tragically lost his battle with the disease at the age of 79 on September 19.
Patrick explained: “I knew he had serious problems and didn’t want to lay it on him that I had it too.
“The last thing he said to me was, ‘I’m eating watermelon’ because they help thin the blood naturally, which he needed to do. Bless him, he was a great man.”
Meanwhile, recently it was reported that Patrick’s co star Nicholas Lyndhurst would probably not be among the line up for remake – as he struggles to come to terms with death of his son Archie.
In 2020, Nicholas’ son Archie tragically passed away at the age of 19 after he’d tragically suffered a brain tumour.
Writer Laurence Marks, who has been a close friend to the Nicholas family for twenty years – hinted the actor may never return to television ever again.
Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday, he said: “Nicholas underwent tragedy. It must have broken his heart. It would break anyone’s heart.
“He has always kept himself to himself and now he’ll do that more than ever. Now he’s lost his son, he’ll never come out again. I doubt we will see him do any more acting.”
