BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty left fans fuming over a “ludicrous” comment she made about the Highway Code on Saturday’s episode of BBC Breakfast.
Speaking about the newly introduced Highway Code rules, Naga and co-presenter Charlie Stayt were discussing what this means for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
The Highway Code’s new rules have seen the introduction of a hierarchy of road users, which will see pedestrians take the top spot, with cyclists, horse riders and motorcyclists just behind.
Cars, taxis, vans and minibuses will then follow respectively.
Drivers now “must give way” to pedestrians crossing, or waiting to cross, at a junction, and are urged “not to cut across cyclists” at junctions when changing lanes.
On BBC Breakfast Naga made a comment, which sparked fury among viewers as she said: “There’s this rule now, where if a pedestrian is crossing at a certain point cars need to give way, for example.
“And concern that you know, cars may have to slow down at a ridiculous amount to give way because of this new rule when it comes to crossing the road.”
She continued: “So concerns about safety and whether or not should you abide by the rules or just do what’s sensible.”
One viewer took to Twitter to say: “Ludicrous question from Naga on @BBCBreakfast. Giving way to a pedestrian waiting to cross is when turning at a junction. The car will already have slowed right down to make that turn. They are not slowing down ‘a ridiculous amount’ for the pedestrian.”
Another said: “@BBCBreakfast So Naga can quantity the action of slowing down in a car and has a tolerance beyond which she considers it to be ‘ridiculous’. This is the mindset which needs to change. #HighwayCode.”
While a third fumed: “Naga describes ‘cars having to slow down a ridiculous amount’ in @BBCBreakfast piece on changes to Highway Code. What is ridiculous about having to slow down to ensure the safety of vulnerable road users?”
Some members of the public have similar thoughts to the BBC Breakfast presenter though, and have taken to Twitter to air their views on the day of the new rules.
One person took to the social media platform and said: “It’s all very confusing and to be honest bloody ridiculous . It’s well to remember that a lot of the Highway Code is not law and is advisory.”
While someone else penned: “These changes to Highway Code are bl**dy ridiculous.”
BBC Breakfast airs every day at 6am on BBC.
