Kate Garraway has confessed that she and husband Derek Draper are “in many ways strangers” as he continues to battle on after Covid-19 left him hospitalised for 374 days.
The 54-year-old former Labour party advisor was placed into a medically-induced coma and was left with holes in many of his vital organs.
Derek survived one of the worst bouts of Covid that any expert had ever seen and was kept in hospital for over a year before he was reunited with his family – Kate and her children, Darcey, 15, and William (also known as Billy), 12.
The upcoming documentary is a follow on from the award-winning Finding Derek which now explores life at home and the everyday struggles he faces.
Derek’s body was ravaged by Covid, with his major organs severely affected which means he now needs 24-hour care.
In the teaser clip, Kate explained: “I’m very protective of people seeing him vulnerable but this is the reality of life for people that are caring.
“The person he is now, in many ways, is a stranger.”
Another clip shows the Good Morning Britain star speaking to her good friend and co-star Ben Shephard.
Kate asks: “He is desperately clinging on to the idea that things can get better.
“If we have a love and he can be a dad to the children in a whole new way, that’s life isn’t it?”
Meanwhile ahead of the documentary, the My Life Stories star explained in a recent interview that she’d found “a new way to be in love” with Derek.
Kate told Daily Mail’s You Magazine that she’d became quite tearful when it came to thinking about love.
She said: “I’m not sure that we’ve ever fallen out of love, but I think a new path is emerging, a new way to be in love.
“He puts huge trust in me. He just says, ‘Whatever you think’, which is wonderful, but I do get quite tearful about it. I think, ‘God, I hope I’m worthy of that trust.'”
The TV star continued: “But I’ve got his back. That is a relationship in itself, isn’t it? How many times do couples have doubts about each other?”
Kate Garraway: Caring For Derek airs Tuesday, February 22 on ITV.
