BBC Breakfast descends into chaos as star's phone goes off in the middle of interview

BBC Breakfast descended into chaos on Wednesday morning (February 16) as one star’s phone went off right in the middle of an interview.

Hosts Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst were once again replacing regular Monday-Wednesday presenters Dan Walker and Sally Nugent, and chatting to UK citizen Stuart McKenzie – who had lived in the Ukraine for 28 years – via video link.

Also joining them in the studio was Petro Rewko, a member of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

But things in the studio soon went belly-up.

Jon asked Stuart: “So Stuart, we’ll start with you. Why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to be in the Ukraine?”

He replied: “I came to Ukraine in 1994 for business opportunities…”

As Stuart began talking Jon and Sally through his background, his phone began to ring off-screen – but, like a true professional, he ignored the call and carried on talking.

However, the incessant noise was clearly affecting Jon Kay, who soon suspended the interview entirely to turn to Petro.

He quipped: “We’ll come back to you in a minute. Somebody’s phoning you to tell you you’re on the telly, I think!

“We’ll come back to you in a second when that stops!” Jon finished, and couldn’t resist laughing at the brief interruption.

And viewers at home were similarly amused, as one turned to Twitter to say: “LOL Someone’s phoning ya to tell ya [you’re] on the telly lol lol #BBCBreakfast.”

It comes shortly after weather presenter Carol Kirkwood was left red-faced on the programme after Jon Kay aimed a crude fart joke at her.

Carol was out on the roof of New Broadcasting House to deliver the forecast, with the wind whipping around her amid brewing Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice.

When the sound of a strong gust of wind was heard through Carol’s microphone as she finished up her report, Jon couldn’t help quipping from the cosy studio: “Complete with sound effects there – we just got a little burst of wind from your microphone.”

A giggling Carol fired back: “I’m glad you said it was on my microphone!” – hinting that Jon implied it was coming from somewhere rather more unsavoury.

“In the air, yes!” Jon reassured her, as Nina giggled: “Just to be clear!”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
