Napoleon Dynamite actor Dale Critchlow dies aged 92, his heartbroken family confirm

Napoleon Dynamite star Dale Critchlow has sadly passed away aged 92.

The actor famously played Farmer Lyle in the 2004 movie.

His family confirmed he passed away in Idaho Falls, Idaho at the MorningStar Senior Living facility on Friday.

Dale also appeared in the 2006 comedy Church Bell, directed by Kurt Hale.

In 2020, Dale sat with East IdahoNews.com to discuss how he nabbed the role in Napoleon Dynamite.

“My wife called Jared Hess’ mother and asked if one of her boys was there,” Dale said at the time of the interview.

The movie star added: “He came over, and he had a friend with him. I drove the truck out into the pasture, and the sheep came over. They grabbed those bucks and pushed them into the truck … and we got them out of there.”

Fans of the movie star have taken to social media to pay tribute to the star following the news of his tragic death.

One person wrote: “Rest In Peace Dale Critchlow “Lyle” from Napoleon Dynamite . ( I ran into him a few years back, nicest guy).”

Another added: “Rest In Peace, Mr Dale Critchlow.”

A third person posted: “So sad to hear about Dale Critchlow.”

While a fourth social media user said: “Heartbroken about Dale Critchlow.”

A funeral will be held March 4 in Preston.

Napoleon Dynamite was a surprise hit with fans, raking in a whopping $46.1 million.

In the film, he played Napoleon Dynamite’s (Jon Heder) neighbour.

In one scene, the farmer is greeted by Napoleon before cocking his gun and shooting a cow in the face. At that moment, a school bus full of kids drove by.

He often sought help from the family as he was visually impaired following a car accident in 1980.

The accident also left his face partially paralysed.

He told Deseret News: “I didn’t even know he was making a movie at the time.

“I was putting hay in my barn and my daughter came in with Jared and said he had a question for me.

“He said to me, ‘Dale, I need a favor. I need you to be in my movie.’ I asked what I needed to do, and he said, ‘Oh, you just need to shoot a cow.’ Well, I can do that.”
