Mrs Brown's Boys 'returning to BBC with first new series in almost 10 years'

Mrs Brown’s Boys is reportedly returning for a new series for the first time in almost a decade.

The Irish sitcom stars show creator Brendan O’Carroll as Agnes Brown with several close friends and family members making up the rest of the cast.

It adopts an informal production style where production mistakes and tomfoolery, mostly instigated by O’Carroll, are edited into each episode.

Despite being lambasted by critics, the show has become a ratings success in both Ireland, where it is set, and the United Kingdom, where it is recorded.

It also receives high ratings in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The show has won numerous awards.

The last full series run of Mrs Brown’s Boys aired in 2013.

A source told The Sun: “Everyone is excited. t’s lovely to be working on another series.”

“The cast can’t wait to see Brendan’s scripts.”

Daily Star has approached Brendan for a comment.

Mrs Brown’s Boys made its screen debut in 2011 and proved a huge hit with millions of fans, who voted it best sitcom of the 21st century.

The BBC series was named best comedy at the National Television Awards three years running.

Its first Christmas special in 2013 pulled in a whopping 9.2 million viewers.

Brendan has continued to make two Christmas specials a year and told the publication in December that a new BBC deal had been secured.

“It’s incredible that the BBC have nailed down such a special slot for Mrs Brown,” he said.

“We’ve been doing it in for nine years already — which is six more than the Royale Family had and more than Morecambe and Wise.

“This new deal we signed last week goes all the way to 2026, which means I will be able to grow into the part, and we’ve a clause in which guarantees Mrs Brown is aired at 10pm on Christmas night, or else we don’t have to make it.

“I wanted that because if it’s not good enough for Christmas Day, then we shouldn’t be making it.”

However, Mrs Brown’s Boys failed to make the top ten list on the ratings list for December 25 in 2021.

Despite this, overall BBC One managed to secure eight of the top 10 programmes on Christmas Day – with ITV taking eighth and ninth place with episodes of Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
