Dan Walker has asked parents for advice on how to explain Russia ’s invasion of Ukraine to children after news of the attack hits headlines nationwide.
The BBC Breakfast star took to Twitter on Friday (25 February) to open the concerning debate online following the latest developments of the devastating attack online.
As a concerned dad-of-three, the former Strictly star reached out to his 751,000 followers on the social media platform to see how other families are discussing the topic to the younger generations.
One of his biggest concerns about explaining the terrifying news happening overseas was discussing the topic without “giving them nightmares”.
The 44-year-old tweeted: “Dear parents / guardians, Interested to know what you are telling your young children about what is happening in Ukraine at the moment without giving them nightmares.”
And users were quick to flood to the broadcaster’s comments section with their advice online with the post receiving more than 1,400 likes in a matter of hours.
Fellow BBC broadcaster Victoria Fritz replied: “Hi Dan, I spoke to my 5 y o son about this yesterday.
“I said mummy had been busy telling people that the people in charge of Russia had been trying to steal another country. That the country was called Ukraine. That the people of Ukraine didn’t want their country stolen.”
She continued: “He said that wasn’t kind, didn’t sound fair and asked me if we knew anyone in Ukraine I said we didn’t. But they like macaroni cheese and apple crumble just like us.”
Another fan of the presenter argued: “I think it’s actually more stressful for young teenagers as they understand more.
“There are 18-year-old boys in Ukraine told they cannot leave the country and have to take up arms.
“As the mum of a teenage boy (not yet 18) that absolutely terrifies me.”
A third concerned parent chimed in with: “So tough, our 10 year old was very anxious about it last night and couldn’t fall asleep.
“Husband reassured him about nato, and how far we are from the Ukraine. It doesn’t help that his school project is WW2 right now so it’s all a bit too real. I’m anxious too. It sucks.”
But Dan isn’t the only celebrity parent who is struggling about how to start the difficult conversation with his children, as Holly Willoughby shared her similar struggles on her Instagram account.
The This Morning star shared a horrifying snap of two tanks surrounded by heavily-armed soldiers which she captioned: “How do I explain this to my children … I was asked for questions last night I didn’t have the answers for …”
