Coronation Street in travel blunder as fans spot major Portugal 'mistake'

Coronation Street viewers noticed a bit of a mistake in Chesney Brown’s ongoing storyline with his son Joseph in Monday night’s episode (February 28) of the ITV soap.

Joseph (William Flanagan) made the decision to move to Portugal with his grandmother Linda Hancock (Jacqueline Leonard), as he believed that’s what his dad Chesney (Sam Aston) was wanting.

But as Joseph made his emotional exit from the cobbles, Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) made a bit of a mistake with time zones.

Chesney hugged Joseph as Bernie told the little lad that Paul (Peter Ash) would be in touch at 7pm “your time” – however fans realised that mainland Portugal runs on the same timezone as the UK.

Chesney didn’t want Joseph to leave

One person said: “‘7 o’clock your time.’ Portugal is in the same time zone as UK.”

Another added: “‘Your time’? Portugal is on the same time zone as the UK.”

A third questioned: “Portugal is the same time zone as the UK is it not?”

Portugal actually has multiple time zones though – Azores Time – which runs an hour behind the UK, in and is used on the islands to the West of mainland Portugal.

Chesney and Joseph said their goodbyes on the cobbles

Earlier in the episode, Chesney had tried to convince Linda that everything was fine, choosing not to mention Joseph’s recent disappearing act.

Linda suggested Joseph should go to Portugal to stay with her, and Joseph later said he wanted to move after hearing Ches and Gemma talking about him – though he misunderstood.

Chesney told Joseph that he would let Joseph go if that’s what he really wanted, leaving Joseph secretly gutted, thinking his dad didn’t want him to stay.

Linda was forced to rush back to Portugal that same night though due to problems with her housekeeper, meaning Ches and Joseph had less time together.

Chesney and Gemma were left upset with Joseph going sooner than expected, but Ches was adamant he wanted what was best for Joseph.

Later on, Fiz called round and told Hope to tell Chesney what Joseph had said, revealing that the little lad didn’t want to go to Portugal but he thought the family couldn’t afford to keep him around when they had the quadruplets to look after, too.

Chesney realised the misunderstanding and rushed off to the airport to try and get Joseph back.
