Ricky Gervais mocks celebs who cry on BBC genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?

Ricky Gervais has poked fun at celebrities who blub on Who Do You Think You Are?

The comic thinks it’s ridiculous that they get so emotional about ancestors they have never met.

He said: “I like the way the actors cry. Like, ‘Your great great grandmother, she was a sad little…’

“You didn’t know her. You might as well cry for your great great great…or go back to when we were chimps.

“You didn’t know her! It was 200 years ago. What are you crying about?”

The show, which has been on air for 18 years, is famed for making stars cry.

Over the years famous faces including Kate Winslet and Jodie Whittaker have wept after finding out information about late relatives.

Producers are always on the lookout for household names to agree to research their family tree for the show.

But Ricky has warned them there’s no point in them offering him the chance to appear.

Asked if he’d ever do it, he said: “I definitely wouldn’t. Imagine being on telly and them go, ‘Oh and here’s your great great grandfather, Horacio Gervais. He was a prolific paedophile, beaten to death in jail’. I’d go ‘Oh, poor Horatio’.

“You’re only gonna find out bad s***, aren’t you?”

He added: “I’m not cut out for that.”

Ricky recently revealed he’s creating a new sitcom – but he’ll only be writing a role for himself that means he can stay fat.

Now that he’s finished with his After Life character Tony Johnson, Ricky’s plan is to write a brand new comedy series for streaming giant Netflix.

But whatever his new comedy series is about, Ricky will ensure that his character doesn’t require him to make any changes to play the role as he’s too lazy to lose weight or alter his appearance.

Telling how he wrote his After Life alter ego with several traits that he has in real life, he said: “I wouldn’t lose weight or put on weight for a role.
