Eamonn Holmes shows pic of swollen face to raise awareness for skin condition

Eamonn Holmes shared a throwback snap of his swollen face from when the TV presenter battled with shingles.

The 62-year-old took to his Instagram account on Tuesday (March 1) to show the effects of the infection after he was left with a swollen right eye and a nasty cluster of red blisters on his face.

The NHS defines shingles as a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox (Varicella Zoster) virus.

He shared the vulnerable snap to show his support for Shingles Awareness Week online as he revealed his serious bout with the skin infection back in 2018.

At the time, the former This Morning star was forced to pull out of the show after he was ordered to stay at home and rest while his body fought off the infection.

The GB News host – who recently seemed to reignite his feud with Phillip Schofield – shared a candid post as he recalled his struggles with the condition alongside the troublesome snaps online.

He wrote: “Having had shingles, I know how painful and exhausting it can be. That’s why I am supporting #ShinglesAwarenessWeek with @gsk and @intefedaging.

“To find out more about the condition, speak to your pharmacist, nurse or doctor or visit www.understandingshindles.co.uk . Funded by GSK #AD.”

Fans of the Irish hunk flooded to his comments section where he received a wave of support from users who had also suffered with the condition in the past.

One follower wrote: “It is horrid – I had ophthalmic shingles (in the eye) which turned out to be viral meningitis so take your symptoms seriously folks!”

Another agreed: “[I] had shingles all round my back and stomach and across my chest. Didn’t realise the awful symptoms that came with shingles, I always thought it was just a rash.”

A third chimed in with: “My niece has suffered with this extremely painful condition too so I fully understand just how bad this gets.”

Even former Dancing on Ice judge John Barrowman commented on the post as he urged users to get the vaccine if they’re eligible, saying: “I’m with you on this @eamonnholmes Talk to your GP about the shingles vaccination.”

But this wasn’t the first time the presenter battled with the condition, after he confessed to I magazine how the horrific infection returned last year.

He said: “It was like some hideous movie, where you feel your face and you go, ‘What’s that?’

“I remember going to the bathroom mirror and jumping back in horror. I had no idea what the symptoms were or why you would even be vulnerable to it.

“I had to no idea whether I had ever had chickenpox at all, so I had to go and ask my mother.”
