Corrie's original Adam Barlow star looks completely different 21 years after soap debut

Coronation Street’s original Adam Barlow actor is now totally unrecognisable 21 years on from his stint in the soap.

Fans of the long-running hit ITV soap may recall that Ken Barlow’s young grandson was originally played by Iain De Caestecker before eventually being recast as current actor Sam Robertson.

Glaswegian Iain – now 34 – was just 14 years old when he was cast in the role appearing for an impressive 54 episodes before he was replaced by an older incarnation of the character in 2003.

Iain, however, hasn’t faded into insignificance over the years and has in fact since appeared in a string of big-name roles both in the UK and across the pond in the USA.

The actor now sports a healthy display of facial hair alongside a cropped hairdo and has been seen in shows including BBC One’s BAFTA-winning series The Fades and mini-series Us.

He has also secured roles in the political thriller, Roadkill. as well as branching out into movies with parts in Shell, Lost River and Overlord.

Perhaps his most notable achievement is becoming a series regular in Marvel TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D appearing in 126 episodes over seven seasons of the hit show.

The popular series is set in the same universe as Avengers Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, with key characters from the box office smash movies crossing over into the show regularly.

Iain has previously spoken about how he was quite oblivious to just how big a deal it was when he first landed the role of Adam in Coronation Street.

He told the Daily Record at the time: “I was just a kid who landed a good part. I’d no idea it was watched by millions. I hadn’t even seen Corrie.”

Iain also addressed reports that he was replaced because Corrie’s bosses wanted someone extremely good looking to fill the role.

He continued: “It’s probably true I wasn’t good looking enough but I’ve no hard feelings.”

Coronation Street continues Friday on ITV at 7.30pm
