BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty has infuriated fans after asking “stupid” questions to Sergiy Stakhovsky, a man who decided to go back to Kyiv to fight.
Sergiy, who lives in Hungary with his family, made the decision to go back to Ukraine to fight after Russia invaded the country.
He joined BBC Breakfast on Thursday morning via video link as he was quizzed on the situation by Naga, who asked him how long he had been away from home.
Sergiy couldn’t remember which day of the week it was, prompting Naga to describe the situation as “heartbreaking”, before she began to ask him about his decision to leave his family.
She said: “I mean, this is heartbreaking. I wonder what conversations you are able to have with your wife and what she is able to tell your children?”
Sergiy said: “Well, she was upset, we’re talking now. I just hope that one day she will forgive me for what I’ve done. I’m not sure I would forgive myself but it was a no win scenario.”
Naga added: “That conversation must have been very difficult. Do you think you’ve made a choice between your family and your country?”
He responded: “Yes, that’s how it looks like, unfortunately.”
Sergiy explained that there were other people around him who were forced to make the same decision, and as he explained, fans immediately went online and fumed at Naga.
One person wrote on Twitter: “F***ing hell Naga, leave the poor bloke alone and stop asking stupid questions.”
Another said: “I think we can imagine what they’ve been saying to their children. You’re just sensationalising.”
A third wrote: “Naga: ‘Do you think you’ve made a choice between your family and your country?’, what a stupid question.”
Another viewer added: “Naga wtf. Why are your pursuing that line of questions? Twist the knife why don’t you.”
One viewer even stated they wouldn’t be watching the show again, writing: “I’ve never watched BBC Breakfast before, this interview by Naga means I’m unlikely to watch again.”
Sergiy said that he hopes to speak with his family again later today, and Naga added: “I hope that conversation brings you light. I wish you peace.”
BBC Breakfast continues daily from 6am on BBC One.
