Firefighters have scaled back the ongoing operation at a historic mill in the heart of West Yorkshire which was often used as a set for the period dramas Downton Abbey and Peaky Blinders.
On Thursday (3 March), Dalton Mills went up in flames which took 20 fire engines and more than 100 firefighters several hours to put out which completely destroyed the building.
Residents in the nearby area were urged to keep their windows and doors closed and stay inside while the crew worked to put out the fiery inferno as many residents decided to vacate the area to The Leisure Centre at Victoria Park to escape the fumes.
Now, the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed crews are continuing to dampen down the remains of the old building.

West Yorkshire Fire Service confirmed Friday morning there is still one fire engine and one aerial appliance on the scene continuing to flood the area to prevent any further outbreaks on the site.
They told residents: “Damping down in ongoing at Dalton Mill. The incident has been scaled back. 1 fire engine &1 aerial appliance remain on scene.
“Thanks to local residents & our partner agencies for their support.”

It comes after clips from the scene circulated online which show the roof of the large structure covered in bright orange and red flames as fire crews struggled to keep the situation under control.
Flames continued to spread throughout the entire structure as the one witness, Marchus Levine, told the Yorkshire Post: “Drama across from my studio as Dalton Mills, Keighley goes up in smoke.
“As I Ieft it got a lot worse with barrels of flames pouring out the windows. It just looked like a bit of smoke for ages. All that work refurbishing the building has now been destroyed.”
The historic site featured in the 2019 Downton Abbey as well as being used as a popular location throughout all six series of Peaky Blinders.

According to the Dalton Mills’ Facebook page, the building has also featured in the BBC’s adaptation of North and South, been spotted in the British magazine show Sunday Life as well as a host of Bollywood films.
The states property biography boasts: “After Salts Mill and Manningham Mills, Dalton Mills is considered the most architecturally important mill in the region.
“It has a rich and fascinating history in Keighley, providing an income for more than 1.000 workers in its heyday.”
It is currently unclear what may have started the fire or if the structure will be able to be salvaged.
