Roman Kemp thought suicide was 'only way out' as he opens up on mental health battle

Roman Kemp has revealed he used to think taking his own life was the “only way to stop” the pain he was going through.

The Capital Breakfast star, 29, has opened up about his harrowing mental health battle, and the suicidal thoughts he used to suffer.

Roman said he “couldn’t stop crying” at one point in his life, and he was worrying about everything.

The radio host bravely spoke about hitting rock bottom on Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO podcast.

On the podcast, the former I’m A Celeb star explained he thought about jumping in front of a train in 2019 – after coming off antidepressants.

Speaking on the episode, he said: “When you’re in that zone, in an absolute spiral, everything goes into a blur.

“All I know I was in my house sat in my pants and I couldn’t stop crying.

“I couldn’t stop worrying about everything. My head was going like a whirlwind.”

He went on to say he felt hopeless as he struggled against the voices in his head.

Roman continued: “I was worrying about stuff that wasn’t even logical.

“I can’t describe what my brain was telling me. Anything that could have been a problem in my head, was a problem.

“You’re thinking you look bad, you’ve not done this, your tax bill, are you ever going to do this… loads of voices.

“At that point I thought, ‘I don’t know what to do’. The only thing I could think of was, ‘OK, I’ll take my own life. That’s the only way to stop this.’

He added: “You’re in such an intense place that your mind just implodes.”

Roman’s mum Shirley managed to help her son in his time of need by calling him and keeping him chatting on the phone before helping him seek more support.

Tragically, the following year Roman lost his best friend and Capital co-star Joe Lyons, who took his own life aged 31.

Kemp found out the news whilst presenting his Capital Breakfast show in August 2020.

Paying tribute to his friend, Roman starred in the BBC mental health documentary, Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency, which tackled the suicide crisis impacting men across the UK.
