There were emotional scenes at cricketing legend Shane Warne’s funeral as son Jackson and daughter Summer kissed their dad’s coffin as they said their goodbyes.
Warne passed away on March 4 after suffering a heart attack while holidaying with some pals in Thailand. Friends and family poured into the St Kilda Football ground, Melbourne, on Sunday to say one last goodbye to the ‘King of the Spin’.
Jackson Warne, 22, who looked the spitting image of his dad, kissed the coffin as the procession come to end as ‘The Best’ by Tina Turner began to play. Jackson also held his dad’s beloved golf club at the service, Warne had been a keen golfer after retiring from cricket.
In an emotional speech, Jackson said: “To my brother, my best friend, to my Dad, I love you so much. I don’t think anything is ever going to fill the void you have left in my heart.
“Sitting at the poker table, walking around the golf course, watching the Saints and eating pizza is never going to be the same.
“But I know all you ever wanted for me is to be happy, no matter what. You just wanted me to be happy, that’s it. So that’s what I’m going to do, try and be happy.
“I am going to miss you so much Dad and you were truly the best father and mate anyone could’ve asked for. I love you so much Dad, see you soon.”
Warne’s other two kids, Summer and Brooke, were also in attendance, and both spoke about their dad. Summer was in tears as the funeral came to a close, while Brooke kept her black sunglasses on during the service.
Dannii Minogue, Michael Clarke and Merv Hughes were among the celebrity guests while Michael Vaughan had also jetted over from England for the service.
Warne’s ex-wife Simone was also in attendance, but she slipped in through a back door where she was greeted by immediate family in a separate room.
However, Warne’s former fiancée, actress Elizabeth Hurley, was in attendance at the St Kilda Football ground.
Hurley had been expected to fly out to Australia for the service, but she revealed overnight she wouldn’t make the funeral. Hurley wrote: “My heart aches that I can’t be in Australia tomorrow for Shane’s funeral. I was filming last night and, with the time jump, I physically can’t get there.”
A second funeral will be held on March 30 at the MCG for a crowd of up to 100,000 fans. And Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced he will be at the service.
That event will be ticketed, and it will be live-streamed for those who can’t make it in person.
