Kate Garraway has admitted her worry about “getting through another day” as her husband Derek Draper’s horror health battle continues.
Speaking emotionally to a packed crowd at The Great British Care Awards, the 54-year-old thanked the carers who look after the needy, including Derek, who has been battling the deadly Covid-19 superbug which left him in hospital for 374 days.
As she gave a passionate speech in front of a crowd of carers at the ICC Birmingham alongside co-host Steve Walls, Kate said: “I want you to know how important the work you do is and how much we do realise it.
“That moment when you think the carer isn’t going to arrive and you think ‘how am I going to move Derek, let alone get through another day’.
“And then they do and you think, ‘oh thank god, I’m not alone.’ It’s just extraordinary. Thank you so much on a personal level.”

Kate’s husband Derek caught Covid very early on in the pandemic and remains in need of ongoing care after suffering organ failure and clots on his lung.
Derek also faces losing the ability to walk again after the tendons and muscles in his legs seized up from having been in an induced coma for so long.
The care he receives is so critical that he would die within three days if he were to be left unaided, Kate has admitted.
The busy presenter is utterly devoted to caring for her husband alongside the professionals, revealing previously that often gets up every two hours in the night to help the overnight carer to move him in bed, and she has to wash and change his bed linen a staggering seven times a day.
Kate documented her journey with Derek for ITV one-off special Finding Derek that gave an intimate insight into the pair’s life since his diagnosis.
Kate secured a prestigious National Television Award for the documentary, , which showed the heartbreaking reality of Derek’s battle with Covid-19.
