BBC Breakfast's Sally and Ben's 'tone-deaf' bread quips spark fury as they replace hosts

BBC Breakfast spoke to Chancellor Rishi Sunak as he defended the Spring Statement but viewers were outraged over the presenters’ post-interview conversation.

During a segment in which reporter Nina Warhurst grilled him about the cuts, she turned the conversation toward the price of a loaf of bread.

She asked him to tell her which item he thinks has risen in price during recent trips to the supermarket.

Nina said that she had noticed crisps had gone up which made Rishi laugh and he replied with “probably bread,” which he thinks gone up to £1.20 from its original price of £1, which he “recalled from memory”.

Nina then asked him what his favourite loaf was: “It’s a Hovis, kind of seeded thing. Well, we have a whole range of different breads in my house. A degree of healthiness between myself, my wife and my kids.”

Warhurst then agreed and admitted she was “partial to a seeded loaf herself” before the interview came to a close.

She then cut back to the studio, where Ben Thompson and Sally Nugent were ready to take over, and Ben said that he “loved the insight” into the Chancellor’s life while Sally repeated in disbelief that he has a “range of breads”.

She also admitted that she “loved” that Nina “kept it real” with her crisp comment and the presenters laughed with Mike Bushell, who was preparing for his sports segment.

Viewers couldn’t believe the presenters’ jolly nature after such a harrowing report and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the segment.

One tweeted: “How tone deaf are you? Sunak just told you about the range of bread they have in the rich peoples house and you think it’s funny. Many people can only afford cheap sliced white bread [which] isn’t at all funny.”

Another said: “Well done BBC Breakfast. Pressing questions to Rishi about him screwing over the poor, but managed to turn it round at the end into a friendly little chat about bread. Can’t have him too demonised, can we?”

Another angry viewer wrote: “After a decent interview by your reporter, you go back to the studio to those three clowns laughing about bread! No wonder this government acts with such impunity. They need to be held accountable.”
